The ‘Woke Mind Virus’ Is Eating Away at Republicans’ Brains and might change the 2024 Election outcomes
Republican politicians — from presidential contenders to anonymous state legislators — are monomaniacally focused on banning books, fighting “wokeness” and harassing transgender people. Some Republicans are even still denying the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election, doubling down on the election-related conspiracies that hobbled many Republican candidates in the midterms.
Not only do Americans not care about the various Republican obsessions — in a recent Fox News poll 1 percent of respondents said “wokeness” was “the most important issue facing the country today” — but a large majority say that those obsessions have gone too far. According to Fox, 60 percent of Americans said “book banning by school boards” was a major problem. Fifty-seven percent said the same for political attacks on families with transgender children.
It is not for nothing that in Biden’s first TV ad of the 2024 campaign, he took specific aim at conservative book bans as a threat to freedom and American democracy.
And yet there’s no sign that Republicans will relent and shift focus. Just the opposite, in fact; the party is poised to lurch even farther down the road of its alienating preoccupations. On abortion, for example, Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, says candidates need to address the issue “head-on” in 2024 — that they can’t be “uncomfortable” on the issue and need to say “I’m proud to be pro-life.”
But the Republican Party has veered quite far from most Americans on abortion rights, and in a contested race for the presidential nomination, a “head-on” focus will possibly mean a fight over which candidate can claim the most draconian abortion views and policy aims.
There’s more: DeSantis is in the midst of a legal battle with Disney, one of the most beloved companies on the planet, and House Republicans are threatening the global economy in order to pass a set of deeply unpopular spending cuts to widely used assistance programs.
Taken together, it’s as if the Republican Party has committed itself to being as off-putting as possible to as many Americans as possible. That doesn’t mean the party is doomed, of course. But as of this moment, it is hard to say it’s on the road to political success.
As for Joe Biden? The current state of the Republican Party only strengthens his most important political asset — his normalcy. He promised, in 2020, that he would be a normal president. And he is promising, for 2024, to continue to serve as a normal president. Normal isn’t fun and normal isn’t exciting. But normal has already won one election, and I won’t be surprised if it wins another.

Has Anyone Been Sued More Than Donald Trump?
An examination of the unique set of factors that may have led him to be involved in thousands of lawsuits.
Donald Trump has faced an incredible number of lawsuits in his life. In 2016 USA Today found that Trump and his businesses were involved in at least 3,500 legal actions in federal and state courts over the three decades before that.
Some of those legal troubles are, notably, going on as we speak, while he’s running for president. Trump was recently indicted by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, he’s currently under trial for rape, and he’s facing two more federal investigations that could very well announce an indictment any day now. All in all, Forbes found that there are at least 40 active legal challenges facing the former president and his businesses.
That got us wondering: Has anyone been sued more times than Trump? What’s the most someone has ever been sued in the U.S., anyway?
Googling the question doesn’t get you very far. The results are mostly stories about the world’s most litigious man (allegedly! Please don’t sue us): Jonathan Lee Riches, who has filed over 4,000 lawsuits, according to ABC News. When the Guinness Book of World Records awarded him the world record for most lawsuits filed, he—guess what?—sued them.
So I reached out to a few law professors who specialize in complex litigation, and they couldn’t think of anyone who has been entangled in as many lawsuits, as both a plaintiff and a defendant, as Trump. It’s “definitely unprecedented” for a former president, said Jed Shugerman, a law professor at Fordham University School of Law.
Trump has built up a massive public profile as a businessman and now a former president, and some experts think that it’s emboldened him to sue, even threatening people that cross him. “One thing that makes Donald Trump unique is that he doesn’t shy away from litigation. He relishes it. For him, it’s what I’ve always thought of as an overall strategy to elevate his public profile,” explained Adam Zimmerman, a law professor at Loyola Law School. If a lawsuit Trump has initiated turns sour, he usually turns it around and blames the court system—the same argument he uses when someone else sues him.
Trump’s large number of legal entanglements is particularly impressive because it’s not exactly easy to bring a lawsuit in the U.S. The legal system is expensive, with a huge assortment of court fees, plus the cost of hiring a lawyer. It also moves pretty slowly. But, somehow, none of that has deterred Trump. “I find it really surprising that Trump is able to pay for this much litigation and that people continue to take the risk of representing him,” said Alexandra Lahav, a law professor at Cornell Law School.
It’s surprising, in part, because Trump has a reputation for not paying his legal bills. One of Trump’s lead lawyers for his second impeachment trial quit just days before it was set to start over a compensation dispute, according to Axios. Trump and his businesses have faced at least 60 lawsuits over unpaid wages, including 24 violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act. He’s earned a reputation of stinginess, and his recent federal election filings indicate he’s turning to his presidential campaign for help, spending about $10 million from his Save America PAC to pay for personal legal fees.

Congress in 1917 capped the size of the federal debt. Over the years, Congress has raised the debt ceiling scores of times, most recently two years ago, when it set the cap at $31.4 trillion. We hit that amount on Jan. 19 and are being told that the “extraordinary measures” Treasury has available to get around it are about to run out. When that happens, all hell will break loose.
Taking advantage of that prospect, congressional Republicans are threatening to do nothing unless the administration agrees to slash many government programs their party has had in its sights. If the president caves into their demands, they will agree to raise the cap — until this crisis occurs again. Then, they will surely pursue the same game of chicken or, maybe more accurately, Russian roulette.
Ignoring one law in order to uphold every other has compelling historical precedent. It’s precisely what Abraham Lincoln did when he briefly overrode the habeas corpus law in 1861 to save the Union, later saying to Congress, “Are all the laws, but one, to go unexecuted, and the government itself go to pieces, lest that one be violated?”
For a president to pick the lesser of two evils when no other option exists is the essence of constitutional leadership, not the action of a tyrant. And there is no doubt that ignoring the debt ceiling until Congress either raises or abolishes it is a lesser evil than leaving those with lawful claims against the Treasury out in the cold. Entrusting the president to decide which of the government’s promises to honor and which creditors to stiff is a power that the Supreme Court denied him when it handed down a 1998 decision that prevented him from vetoing line items within a budget.
In any event, Section 4 of the 14th Amendment prohibits the president from permanently stiffing our creditors — even those required to wait their turn after the Treasury runs dry. So even if Speaker Kevin McCarthy and those pulling his strings succeed in making some of those creditors wait, it wouldn’t eliminate our debts; it would merely replace them with I.O.U.s. And that’s just debt in another form.
All Congress would have done is create economic catastrophe on top of constitutional crisis — and without securing compliance with the debt ceiling that Republican claim to want.

“Not My Type” -- Donald Trump’s astonishing deposition in the E. Jean Carroll trial pretty much says it all.
Trump’s deposition is a defense attorney’s worst nightmare. In the video of Donald Trump’s October 2022 deposition for the E. Jean Carroll trial, he comes off like a petty, resentful liar, making a series of unforced errors so blatant it almost seems he is trying to lose his case.
The video was Trump’s only appearance in the civil trial in which he stands accused of raping and defaming Carroll; his last opportunity to register his intent to take the stand expired on Sunday. The jury heard closing arguments on Monday, yesterday, and will now deliberate on a verdict.
Watching clips from the deposition, which Carroll’s attorneys played for the jury last week, it is easy to see why Trump and his legal team decided to keep him off the stand. His performance suggests he is incapable of even pretending to go through the motions of a humble, respectful round of questioning with a female attorney, much less convince a jury that he is not the kind of guy who would rape someone in a department store dressing room.
In one clip, Trump is confronted with the 2005 Access Hollywood tape — another piece of evidence that was presented to the jury — in which he contended, on a hot mic, that “When you’re a star, they let you do it.” (“It,” you may recall, is kissing women without seeking their permission and grabbing them “by the pussy.”)
“Well, historically, that’s true with stars,” Trump responds in the deposition.
“It’s true you can grab them by the pussy?” Carroll’s lawyer, the prominent women’s rights attorney Roberta Kaplan, asks.
Trump replies, “Well, that’s what — if you look over the last million years, I guess that’s been largely true. Not always, but largely true. Unfortunately, or fortunately.”
It is hard to decide which part of Trump’s self-defense is more absurd and less self-exonerating: the part where he suggests that he was merely explaining to Billy Bush the regrettable history of men using their fame to sexually abuse and exploit women, or the part where he suggests that such abuse may be fortunate. Fortunate! Neither part quite makes Trump seem like a credible defendant who disapproves of sexual assault.
Elsewhere in the deposition tape, Trump answers a question from Kaplan about his claim that Jessica Leeds, who testified last week that Trump forcibly kissed and groped her on an airplane in the 1970s, “would not be my first choice” to “go after.” Then, unprompted, Trump goes on to assess Kaplan’s sexual desirability. “You wouldn’t be a choice of mine either, to be honest with you. I hope you’re not insulted,” he said.
He went on, “I wouldn’t, in any circumstances, have any interest in you.”
This is the former president up to all his old tricks: low-key glorifying sexual assault, attempting to demean a woman wielding power in his vicinity by delivering a sexist, sexualizing insult. None of it should surprise anyone who has paid attention to Trump’s conduct over the course of his life. But somehow, his inability to change his behavior even a little bit to protect himself from a damaging jury verdict suggests new levels of impulse non-control. He had to simply refrain from mocking a woman’s appearance for the duration of one single deposition, which is occurring because another woman has accused him of rape — and he can’t. Or he can’t fathom the possibility that he may experience a consequence of his actions.
A third astonishing moment of the deposition makes a factual point that could clinch the defamation charge.

The Reason Donald Trump Can’t Be Destroyed
There’s not really an incentive for Donald Trump to modify or normalize his behavior. Why would he? In fact, I suspect his popularity would wane if Trump normalized.
Bear in mind: Donald Trump is currently on trial for allegations of rape. Think about that. On trial for rape. And it’s barely gaining traction in the news cycle. That’s how different the standard is for Trump.
And frankly, Trump deserves credit for crafting that standard. His outlandish behavior has been consistent enough to suggest authenticity. Similarly, he has never apologized for his behavior. He owns it and his base eats it up. The result has been the anomalous politician who can, roughly speaking, do and say what he wants.
Trump’s appeal, in large part, depends upon him acting more outlandishly than his contemporaries. The behavior all relates back to the 2016 election when Trump stormed into the political conversation with his brash and unorthodox behavior. Trump set himself apart from a crowded GOP field – a field that failed to take Trump seriously – by consistently behaving in a headline-grabbing way. That’s what worked for him. Saying disparaging things about Carly Fiorina, Jeb Bush, or John Kasich. That’s what earned Trump the nomination. Speaking more brusquely about the southern border and John McCain and NAFTA. While the GOP field was adhering to the rigors of accepted decorum, Trump was speaking as if he were three beers deep at the local sports bar. And the voters loved it.
Trump’s personal conduct was so deviant relative to the Washington norms or the standards of his peer politicians that it became easier and easier to believe that Trump’s executive conduct would also be deviant relative to the Washington norms or the standards of his peer politicians – which is exactly what voters wanted at the time.
