It seems to withdraw into that empty space inside the ring. Look closely next time you see the gate deactivated; there's a little gap between the front and the back, with a ridge between them. Presumeably, that ridge is the system that actually creates the wormhole event horizon (and thus marks exactly where it will form). There looks to be about a finger's-width of space on either side of it. Probably just enough to hide the iris.

Bugged me too, at first; I used to assume it was something all gates were equipped with, but that the SGC had just managed to stumble onto.

I don't know about that one, I haven't thought about it much. My question is, why doesn't the formation of the worm-hole de-molecularize the iris?

Furthermore, has anyone noticed that the gat doesn't even spin anymore?

Seriously, I love this show but if you think about it its full of holes.

Are you talking about "The Kawoosh" that destroys anyone standing in front of an activating gate?

The Iris is microns away from the event horizon, which is so close nothing (including the "Kawoosh") can form.

Well, if the "KaWoosh" (ha ha, sounds like a "Dark Tower" word... sorry) is part of the gate's opening and therefore the worm-hole's creation isn't it neccesary and therfore has to happen? As I've always understood it the sideways flushing thing is an outsurging of worm-hole material that spits itself out of the event horizon. It always happens, and would attempt to do so even with the Iris in place. If so, then the worm-hole material should de-materialize the Iris in order to get through. (also, I think that the thuding against the Iris that you get when Jaffa come through is proof enough that things at least try to form in those few particles of space)

As for the rotation of the gate, I think they started to phase it out during season three and stopped alltogether at a later time. They still do it on special occasion type things if memory serves. And to my recollection, earlier on in the show, the gate did turn when people were dialing in from off-world.

The KaWoosh doesn’t need to form for a wormhole to form, in "Small Victories" Thor engaged the stargate without a KaWoosh.

I think the KaWoosh is a backflow of excess energy from the creation of a wormhole, and races like the Asguard in the time since the Ancients ascended have developed ways to regulate the energy needed for a wormhole to open so they can minimize the KaWoosh.

The reason the Jaffa 'thud' on the iris is that their particles still exist they just haven’t had time to form in its origional object, the KaWoosh works the same way.

Of course I'm not a Physicist.
