The thing about the brain is that there is no real software, everything is hard wired to some degree. What this study fails to answer, is if these traits are congenital or due to environment? If you live in a very structured environment you may have a harder time responding to change and that may also effect your political outlook.

I also think it's possible to change.
For years I was very concerned about how things "should be". I cast everything in the light of whether it was "good" or "bad" measured against my list. I failed to see a lot of things because I tried to fit so many square pegs into round holes. Or I didn't even recognize the pegs at all.
When considering ideas it pays not to let your emotions and desires (or fears) intrude too heavily into the arena. You have to be still inside and let the evidence speak to you, not try to outshout it.

Where I live in Baytown, 6ix, during the last 4 years there has been one murder on a city block that only has 8 houses. And the murderer was a Trumptard and a big believer in prisons, long prison sentences, gun ownership for fools & the mentally unstable, low taxes, the whole Trump political package for stupid people who continuously struggle to remain in the middle class or even hold a job. His brother spent 10 years in jail for negligent homicide, getting out a year before the murder. It's a long story with only one point: Trumptards are angry poor white trash with issues about honesty, integrity, addiction, mental illness, self-control, lack of ability to read and understand directions.
