Well, obviously Dec is the 10th month, Nov is the 9th month, Octo is the 8th month, and Sept is the 7th month.Quote:But the earliest 7-day week was found in Mesopotamia around 3500 BCE
The 7 day week maybe adopted due to the Bible's designation of The Sabbeth, and spread via Crusades, Pilgrims, Missionaries. Other Religions may as lso have a basis for 7 day week.Quote:I never knew that! Oh, the random stuff you learn when you look things up!
Mesopotamia invented new technology. They were the first to use the wheel. The wagon was a transportation revolution for farming and trade. They developed a number system based on 60--this explains why we have 60 seconds in minute and 60 minutes in an hour.Quote:
They used a 12 month calendar with a 7 day week.

Possibly the early tribe of Israel came up with a 7-day week independently, but many historians give the nod to Sumer.
Quote:There are time zones a half hour out of sync???
I'm wondering if there is a language basis for some places and regions having Time Zones which are a Half Hour out of synch with their neighbors. Or is it purely a geographic nature?Quote:So, another thing I learned ... lunar cycles are 29.5 days, not 28. The rotation of the earth (day), the revolution of the moon ("month") around the earth, and the revolution of the earth around the sun (year) don't conveniently coincide, and they definitely don't coincide with our calendaring system. Leap year is a pretty good approximation of "days" to "years", but the lunar cycle and the 7-day week are off by slightly more than a day, drat it! And the cumulative lunar cycles definitely don't coincide with a solar (or stellar) year ... a lunar year is about 11 days short of a solar year; the two only line up every 33 years. The Islamic calendar is purely lunar, Jews use a combination lunar/solar calendar. That explains why Easter is tied to the phase of the moon.
The 365 day cycle was established beyond the purview of Caesar, Kaiser, Emperor, King, Czar, Tsar - so would you prefer it divided into 73 weeks of 5 days? Lunar cycles would be close to every 6 weeks.Quote:I agree. Also, sailing cultures would probably be more attuned to high and low tides.
I'm not familiar with a trend of Lunar Calendars, but I would imagine them less prevalent in Latitudes farther from the Equator, when the Solar cycle is more critical. But on the Equator, what difference does it make what time of the year it is - other than the stars changing position in cycles near 13 moons, but still drifting for multiples of 13 moons (regaining synch every 396 Lunar cycles, or about 11,682 days - or 32 Solar Years)?
Thanks for thinking these random thoughts with me!

I don't recall the answer to this: are Tides more severe at the equator, or closer to Poles? Tides are more severe when other planets align, right? Tides farther from the Equator change severity more based upon which month/season it is, right? (How inclined the Sun and Moon appear in our sky, meaning "winter" tides are more moderate, right?)
The month of Sextilius (6th) was changed to August when Caesar Augustus modified the Julian Calendar.
The month of Quintilius (5th) was changed to July when Julius Caesar reset the existing calendar into the Julian Calendar.
The original 4th month was named for Juno.
The original 3rd month was named for Maia, Goddess of Spring.
The original 2nd month was named for Aphrodite, Goddess of Love.
The original 1st month, the month to resume war, was named after Mars, God of War.
The Intercalendar month at the end of the year was abolished, I think by either Numa Caesar around 7NOTIFY: Y | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME

That sounds like a 'Bullshit Story' the Roman Empire was huge, I believe it was more to do with a festival, protection, celebrations! A festival for a militant Mars-God being a force offering protection of the state and agriculture they had wars in France, in Scotland, in Egypt, in Northern Germany, in the Middle East, each of these zones had different climates and there was no perfect month to wage war and some wars continued for generations...most of the Roman Gods were copied from Greece, their culture was a modified Hellenic culture.

but it wasnt always so, at times it was 'French' or your Zionist Israeli nutjob friends will hate this...but for a while the language of mathematics and science was German. Plus they still use terms and concepts from 'everywhere' the world, Greek, Arab, Hindi terms depending on a heritage
English has been leading but science is starting to crash in The West once again

Hey, thanks (not) for injecting Islamophobia into a purely theoretical discussion about language.
*****
I was re-reading the original thesis and it occurred to me that "atomicity" of the English language probably affected our numbering system. I imagine it would make us prone to seeing units of measurement in whole numbers.
Now, I know the Greeks were big on ratios and harmonics. They had an early if imprecise knowledge of frequencies, and believed that the universe was harmonic, which is why the early determinatuon of "pi" (irrational number) drove them bug nuts, bc "pi" wasn't harmonic with anything.
Also, an " atomic" language seeks to break things down to their independent units: atoms, electrons, protons, neutrons... but then we get down to subatomic " things" like quarks which seem to be mainly made- up concepts.

Some had a cool movie factor, the Cantonese culture of Hong Kong etc is well known. which is already China ....Mongolia not so much, they have a China link but a lot of Asians considered them horseback savages with swords and arrows...great at fighting but little to offer history with 'culture' Mongolians beat China but China absorbed them, Mongols forgetting their own language, some took Chinese writing systems as it was 'superior' civilization, they might be closer to old Khanates, Russians or Siberians today, Mongolia seemed to be culturally lost and even briefly switched to the Latin script, maybe Russians worrisome or troublesome now with invasion of Ukraine or Russians are 'uncool' now so they changed the script again in 2020.
China has been Asia, East Asia, South East Asia, it has been the center of culture in Asia for a long time
but also Tokyo, Seoul, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam it was all one literature, Buddhism, poet, philosophical sphere and probably would not take much for them to spread back in the China-sphere, especially if Asia got more stable. There are also significat Chinese numbers in Singapore etc the Sinic world. I dont think a lot of people would get any of this other than a Hawaii Aloha or Japanese 'konichiwa' phrase or maybe they knew British were in Hong Kong, its a bit like how Mohammedanism is across Arabia Persia Iran North Africa etc or the 'Latin' influence across Europe but Latin is classed a dead language, a lot of the Sino written and religion tradition of Asia survives today.

Here's the whole thing that's counter intuitive ...It DID HAPPEN in China, they were the ones with books and a printing press, 7th century in the Tang dynasty, maybe recorded in year 1088 in the Korean Kingdoms.
Our phonetic system must seem kinda dumb to them Spanish alphabet consists of 27 letters, English alphabet consists of 26 letters, including 5 vowels and 21 consonants, the modern Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters
but they had to learn Thousands upon Thousands of logographic picture letters
Yes it existed, they gave the world printed documents but their strange way of using thousands of letters.
it slowed the ability of the common poor person and because so much time and knowledge was needed before you could even read and write the knowdldge was only passed among elites
a guy in Korea named Sejong the Great of the Joseon Dynasty, he knew Chinese writing but his people were poor so in mid 1400
