I read Brave New World right after I read 1984. Both futures are rather horrific, but I certainly would prefer BNW to 1984. At least they bred everyone for their designed roles without a speck of intelligence higher than they needed to function in them and everybody was too doped up to realize how fucked they were.
1984 was the scariest book I ever read, with only Animal Farm coming close to it.

By making Big Brother so easily recognizable (he is physically similar to both Hitler and Stalin, all three having heavy black mustaches and charismatic speaking styles), Orwell makes sure that the reader of 1984 does not mistake his intention — to show clearly how totalitarianism negatively affects the human spirit and how it is impossible to remain freethinking under such circumstances.
Luckily, the English-speaking part of the world understood the message in the novel 1984 about Russia back in 1948, but nowadays dimwits think 1984 is a message about the dreaded Democrats of 2023, not about Putin's simple plan to destroy Ukraine either with explosives or starvation or brainwashing Ukrainian children.

All I saw while reading 1984 was the current state of affairs both in technology and in the American government under GWB.

(And at least Winston could spot the cameras and microphones to avoid them once he knew about their existence. Do you know how small the Alexa microphone in a Firestick Remote is? You probably wouldn't unless you removed the tiny housing to find it and see how much smaller than the housing it was before you ripped Alexa's ears out.
Consider that when the microphone about the size of half a grain of rice in there is just one of many parts contained in a device that you can regularly get on sale for a measly $20 in current year and even if you don't own a smartphone you're always within earshot of a few hundred other people with microphones always on and always listening who do every day.)
