I was just cleaning out my gutters of other people's tree-crap during torrential rain. That was after almost getting stung by hornets that made a hive in an external electrical box I was trying to map where it would have been coming from outside the garage. When I finally killed them off and cleaned it out I got my multimeter out and turned the breaker back on, only to be suckerpunched by buckets of rain with zero forewarning and it's been raining ever since. None of this was in the forecast.
At least I didn't get stung or electrocuted.
Today sucks. I'm done working until tomorrow.

Yeah. It was just a really weird day all around with the timing of everything. I'm not overly superstitious or anything, but I took all of that that as a sign that maybe I should take a break from work.

I FINALLY managed to clear out the other veggie patch. Tomorrow I should be able to weed whack a fair portion of the frontyrd in preparation for digging it up/out.
Oh, and I made the best roast beef, quite by accident. I had a 1.5 lb piece of tri tip in the freezer, and I was going to make a stuffed- mushroom flavored beef hash (cubed beef, potatoes, shrooms, onion, thyme, s&p, maybe a little parmesan) but in order to prep the beef I decided to roast it first. I've never roasted tri tip before, I always braised it. It came out SO GOOD I served it that way, and had the potatoes, shrooms, onions and thyme on the side. With a big salad and strawberries for dessert.
It's been a long time since I had roast beef, and it was yummy.

It looked like maybe I wasn't going to work today either, but I got my ass in gear around 1:00PM and got back to it.
I took that external outlet back apart so I could test the one coming up from the post and verified that yes, the old romex going down from the box outside of the garage does power that post that probably was used to power the filter on a pool at some point. I will likely be removing that, but I might now just cut it down below the surface and keep it buried rather than disturb my grass the whole length.
A few wasps had already come back and were trying to build a new hive. I had to take care of them again and clean that thing out before capping the box off so they couldn't get back in before I get around to removing all of that.
I ran all of the conduit, boxes and wires I'll need for everything else in the front of the garage and installed another box outside at the front. It's capped off overnight because I don't have the materials on hand to finish it. I think I might actually go with GFCI receptacles outside instead of standard ones. Probably overkill though because I decided to also add switches inside the garage that can turn those off when they're not in use. Did that to the front already, but I need to do it to the back one tomorrow after I get more supplies.
I was also able to power up the ANCIENT light that is over the garage door. I knew it was a massive bulb, but I've never seen anything like this in my life. I unscrewed it to see if I could put a small LED bulb in there temporarily until I get a LED motion sensor light, but the socket is twice the size of a standard bulb socket.
So after I got a box up there I attached the wires and wouldn't you know it fired up. Who knows how long it's been since that light had even been turned on. There hasn't been any power even remotely close to it for the 12 years that I've lived here.
It's LOUD... It buzzes. It's a greenish-blue color. It reminds me more of a bug zapper than a light bulb. When looking at it through my tablet you can see a weird "scanline" effect reminiscent of old CRT televisions. I wouldn't be surprised if it sucks up 800 watts.
I disconnected it and capped off those wires in the box for now. Should be fairly easy to modernize that and get some real light on that side of the property at night finally.
So except for those things I still need to do, all the electric is done in the garage besides whatever solution I'm going to come up with in the 1/2 garage part over my workbench. It's time to get those dusty old florescent lights out of there and get something much brighter that will use a fraction of the juice.

Yeah, the weather has been good the last few days SIG. Suppose to be heading into a rain at some point tonight. Computer is reading temp at 18C which is about 66F. That is down from around 23C this afternoon.

I ended up taking out the work I did on the outside outlets in the front and back and starting over on the wiring.
I decided after talking to my friend's dad that I should splurge for the GFCI outlets since I was doing the work right now. I could always do it later, but why not just do it now?
So now the final boxes inside that lead to the outside outlets have both a GFCI with a double outlet and a flapper switch with a new shiny 4"x4" box that accommodates the flapper style size.
I put the switch after the GFCI, because it doesn't make sense to turn off both the exterior and the final interior outlet with the switch off. This is now officially overkill, but damn if it ain't impressive. These are now the safest exterior outlets in a residential home in America.
I also bought brand new covers since I only had one and it was terribly beat up. The new ones are WAY better anyhow and have plenty of cushion seal action going on. Even though my old boxes are grey, I got white covers to match my aluminum. I'm actually going to clean off the old boxes, tape cardboard all around the siding around them and then spray them down with the rustoleum spray I got a month or two back on a huge sale at $2 per can.
I decided to buy EVERYTHING I needed to finish the electrical work in the garage instead of waiting on the rest. The only thing left to do now is the electric coming from the single switch that controls the 4 florescent lights. I just need to do a bit of minor construction work for my boxes, then I'm going to hard pipe everything in.
Maybe it will be finished tomorrow?
