I used to think most of these Conspiracy type threads to be batshit insane, now I'm not so sure.

As much as I hate Davos, it's not a bad question.

I've been saying as much for years on these boards.

Overpopulation is the world's largest problem, and it's the one that nobody ever wants to talk about let alone figure out any solutions to.

There are ways to incentivize actions that would lead to a steady decrease in population that won't require genocide, large famines, an actually scary disease that kills a billion or two, or countless other horrible outcomes.

But as long as we never talk about the problem, it will be left in the hands of the Davos group to decide that for all of us.

They are the people in the shadows that people like me have been warning you all about for decades. Don't feel bad for not listening to us now that they've come out from the shadows. We're powerless to do anything against them now, and we would have been just as powerless back then too.

Oh, I agree that overpopulation is a huge problem. In fact, it's THE problem that's driving our other environemental problems. Well, that and the military.

But who is it that defines people as "useless"? The reason why people are "USELESS" is bc we've been automated out of the equation. Once people are no longer necessary to do the sweat labor so that the elites can live a life of luxury, then AFA "they're" concerned everyone else is redundant to their standard of living. Not only redundant, counterproductive.

So, what about viewing people as a SOLUTION instead of a problem? Why aren't people managing forests and replanting prairies and cleaning up the ocean and farming to add carbon back into the soil?

Because there's no money in it. Because the whole fucking bloody mess of a productive system has been geared by TPTB NOT to provide people with the necessities and some pleasures of existence, but to make a profit. So those who have jobs are slaving away at making crap that will break in six months or be outmoded in a year, is irrepairable or unnecessary. And those who can't find jobs are busy doing whatever they can to beg, borrow, steal or mooch just enough off the govt just to keep on living.

"They" have defined our future for us, and its a future where we truly are parasites. Why can't we grab our future back and re-prioritize where we put our efforts? We could make the globe a paradise on earth, if we wanted to.

Look at the effort that's necessary to fix up you house. Now imagine the work required to fix up the globe. Seems like it should be an "all hand on deck" kind of effort, not shunting people aside.

I'm not going to argue your points, Sigs, but my days of idealism are done.

People, generally speaking, aren't good. They're not evil either, but they're not good.

On an individual level, people are capable of both very good and very evil things. Sadly it's very easy to choose evil because evil is easy and evil is often fun.

A lot of people want to be useless. A lot of people want to have useless jobs.

You're never going to get people to be useful en masse unless something requires them to be useful. A drop in the world population by about 70% would do that. I can't think of anything else that would.

Shunning technology is never going to happen. Just try to take Cap'n's smart phone from him and see what happens.

People are malleable by the circumstace they live in. The problem is, our circumstances ... the roles we are allowed ... ARE defined by EVIL PEOPLE, bc the people at the top are truly evil.

If "people" (in the west, anyway. I can't speak for people in other nations) are so happy, why do we drink, drug, and eat ourselves to death at such phenomenal rates, and spend so much of our time distracting ourselves on social media, or with video games or passive entertainment?

It's bc the reality that we live in is not to be borne.

"People" like maximum reward for minimal effort, but "people" (and ALL mammals AFAIK) NEED to feel some sort of agency in their lives (to secure their existence in a real way), and all social animals (and that includes people) have an innate sense of fairness and desperately want to "belong" to something higher, or greater than they are. Social media feeds those needs, but it's like junk food- it's pretty poor nutrition for our innate needs, which is why we're so anxious, despressed and distressed so often.

I don't think I'm being idealistic about "people", I think I'm realistic. I think we'd mostly be a lot happier in a system that fostered meaningful work, a secure-able future, a greater good, and real in-person family, neighbors and friends to count on in times of distress. AND, yanno, entertainment and "days off". It's a balance. But you would never see that protrayed on TV, or anywhere. (When was the last time you saw on TV an intelligent working family or neighbors who discussed their problems and came to realistic solutions that they worked on together?? All you see are criminals and cops, heroes prone to righteous violence, or families so unbelievably stupid it's a wonder they survived a week.)

But we're actively prevented from that by a vanishingly small [evil] elite who control everything of importance. Especially how we see ourselves.

To beat the point to death - look at you, SIX.

You stopped drinking and hoarding. You're taking active measures to improve your life and insure your future (by increasing the value of your home). You help out your family, neighbors, and friends and, when they are able, they help you.

You've done that by rejecting the role of "low paid worker in a low-cost retail chain" "dedicated to consumption". And you're happier now, right? (You were fortunate to have saved enough money to live on, altho at some point you're going to have to re-engage with "the system" in SOME fashion in order to get more of that filthy lucre!)

Compare that to SECOND, whose only contribution to society (according to him) is being a rentier capitalist and whose only interactions with society are (according to him) hating most of the people he deals with and exploiting the remainder. Hasnt made HIM a happy camper, has it?

It took more stubborness than most people have to fight the system. But that's my point: people shouldn't HAVE to "fight the system" in order to live fulfilling lives.

*****

EDITED TO ADD: We are being ground down, SIX.

The chices we're given...

"Do you fries with that?"
Extra soft or extra strong TP? (assuming you can find it)
Vote for tweedledum or tweedledee?

... are so meaningless as to be insulting. Imagine instead that you had a real choice of jobs that all paid a living wage

Do you want to be a plumber, a forester, or a kindergarten teacher? (Or any number of alternates)
Do you want your city to have more trees, more cops, better drainage, or all of the above?
Do you want your country to wage foreign wars?

And it's not a mistake.

Between lockdowns and sanctions on Russia, our standard of living is being brought down drastically. Covid and Putin are just handy excuses.
