Donald Trump has been credibly accused of committing at least 48 criminal offenses while he was serving as President of the United States or campaigning for that office. Those offenses are listed in the table below, which includes possible offenses that were investigated by the Department of Justice while President Trump was in office as well as possible offenses that have not been the subject of any confirmed reported investigation. While he was in office, President Trump was protected by the DOJ’s policy of not indicting a sitting president, but that policy of course does not apply to a former president. The table does not include potential crimes being investigated by authorities in New York relating to the Trump Organization.

Despite Donald Trump’s staggering record of likely criminal misconduct as president and candidate for that office, he has not been charged with a single criminal offense. While adherence to the rule of law requires that prosecutors pursue criminal indictments only where the facts, law, and principles of prosecution support such action, it is also critical that no individual be insulated from accountability simply because they are a national political figure, a former president or a candidate for public office. Choosing not to pursue accountability for fear of the political criticism or consequences is itself a deeply political act.

It took three and a half years for Congress to slap Nixon's wrist. With Trump, Congress is slower:

When President Richard Nixon ordered U.S. ground troops to invade Cambodia on April 28, 1970, he waited two days to announce on national television the Cambodian incursion had begun. With resentment already building in the country over the conflict in Vietnam, the incursion felt like a final straw.
The news unleashed waves of criticism from many who felt the president had abused his powers by side-stepping Congress. By November 1973, the criticism had culminated in the passage of the War Powers Act. Passed over Nixon’s veto, it limited the scope of the Commander-in-Chief’s ability to declare war without congressional approval.
The US took many years to rid itself of Nixon. Getting rid of Trump would take as long. Why? The weakness in the United States is the same one George Washington pointed out in his farewell, that there is no mechanism to swiftly remove a bad President. There is not even a reliable method to decide what "bad" means, which is why the US gets into bad trouble so many times. Unlike with the US and its bad Presidents, countries with a better design can remove a bad Prime Minister in a few days. Meanwhile, in countries that don't function very well, a President like Nixon can get away with criminally running the Vietnam War for years. Or a President like Putin gets away with his Ukraine War.
It is impossible to scientifically compare opinions about wars from two groups of Americans, separated by 50 years, because all the Americans of 50 years ago are today either dead or decrepit, but it is easy to compare the personalities of the two groups across so many years because the same kinds of personalities reliably keep repeating over the decades. It is new people, but the same old personalities in younger bodies. What I see is the kind of Americans in the group who were of the opinion that Nixon should continue his rampage in Vietnam are the kind of Americans who would let Putin continue his rampage in Ukraine and want President Trump in 2024.
P.S. -- When I returned from Vietnam with my eyewitness report on how stupid, incompetent and dishonest Richard Nixon was, it changed no minds of people with the kind of personality who would vote for a Nixon or a Trump or a Ron DeSantis or a Ted Cruz, four slices of moldy baloney.

America’s Conspiratorial Delusions Weren’t Born Under Trump
False realities have been part of the U.S. political scene for decades.
Donald Trump lost the election, but he won the election cycle. His conspiracy-mongering and high-profile support of right-wing propaganda outlets have left an indelible mark on American culture. But while Trump may be the undisputed champion of these tactics, he didn’t create them. Far-right politicians and media personalities have been creating false realities for decades, and they’ll keep doing it as long as possible — regardless of whether it spurs extremist groups or even terrorist attacks.
Trump’s pandering to extremists may be the most obvious source of the problem. But that’s only because he lacked the self-discipline and political subtlety of ideological allies like Sen. Mitch McConnell and former Attorney General Bill Barr, both of whom acted to sabotage President Joe Biden’s legitimacy without tweeting their plans to the world. Future right-wing politicians will fine-tune their messages and orchestrate more deniable intimidation campaigns, and it’s entirely possible that the smaller left-wing extremist movements will swell up in response as more people give up on democratic norms. This may not cause the U.S. system of government to collapse, but they can certainly make the next few decades unpleasant.
This outcome isn’t inevitable, but responsible Americans from all parties need to act swiftly. Deceitful politicians need to be held accountable at the ballot box, and right-wing grifters need to see their profits dwindle. Most importantly, all Americans need to be aware of the supposed alternate realities that dominate so many lives.

On June 9, the Jan. 6 House Select Committee will hold public hearings as part of their ongoing investigation into the storming of the Capitol last year. In short order, the set of six scheduled televised sessions this month are likely to build momentum towards making the case that the president was directly involved in attempts to undermine the peaceful transition of power. And as the steady dropping of shocking findings from the committee over the course of the past months suggests, the sessions will likely have many viewers on the edge of their seats.
Some legal observers argue the Justice Department faces an uphill battle in determining criminal intent because Trump could claim that he actually believed his own Big Lie about massive voter fraud. Even if his Attorney General and others told him directly that the claim was false, was Trump’s outside lawyer, John Eastman, whispering contrary messages into Trump’s ear?
On that front, the committee just released new evidence showing that Eastman, too, knew the claim lacked factual foundation.
New reports also revealed that the committee has testimony that Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows burned documents in his White House office fireplace. Substantial evidence in the public record already pointed to his central role in the plot.
Do innocent people burn documents in the White House? The good news is that Meadows didn’t burn his phone with its text messages, and that he gave 2,319 of those messages to the committee in response to their subpoena before reversing course and not cooperating. Trump's son texted, “He’s got to condemn this shit.”

Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff called Mr. Pence’s lead Secret Service agent to his West Wing office. The chief of staff, Marc Short, had a message for the agent, Tim Giebels: The president was going to turn publicly against the vice president, and there could be a security risk to Mr. Pence because of it.
It is unclear what, if anything, Mr. Giebels did with the message. But as Mr. Trump attacked his second in command — and democratic norms — in an effort to cling to power, it would prove prophetic.
A day after Mr. Short’s warning, more than 2,000 people — some chanting “Hang Mike Pence” — stormed the Capitol as the vice president was overseeing the certification of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory. Outside, angry Trump supporters had erected a mock gallows. After Mr. Pence was hustled to safety, Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, is reported to have told colleagues that Mr. Trump said that perhaps Mr. Pence should have been hanged.
