Fwiw, I think the biggest miscalculation Putin made, is that even before he decided to invade Ukraine and kill women and children, Russia was universally disliked and distrusted. World wide. I think he actually thought people liked him even? Like some some cute Disney talking rat villain. Now? Especially with recent war crimes so obvious? That hatred is DEEP. It's not going away any time soon, certainly not as long as he is alive.
