Rents Reach ‘Insane’ Levels Across US With No End in Sight
(It is not insane. There is a well understood logic to price inflation.)
Krystal Guerra’s Miami apartment has a tiny kitchen, cracked tiles, warped cabinets, no dishwasher and hardly any storage space.
But Guerra was fine with the apartment’s shortcomings. It was all part of being a 32-year-old graduate student in South Florida, she reasoned, and she was happy to live there for a few more years as she finished her marketing degree.
That was until a new owner bought the property and told her he was raising the rent from $1,550 to $1,950, a 26% increase that Guerra said meant her rent would account for the majority of her take-home pay from the University of Miami.
“I thought that was insane,” said Guerra, who decided to move out. “Am I supposed to stop paying for everything else I have going on in my life just so I can pay rent? That’s unsustainable.”

This is how Capitalism works: Buy a property. Raise the Rent. Renters leave that can't pay. This eternal price increase continues as long as enough renters have money. Only when renters run out of money do prices stop increasing. Maybe prices fall a little, but usually property owners have a good understanding of how much money is out there so that rents don't overshoot than are forced to drop. Property owners try avoiding year-to-year rental income drop because it looks bad on their accounting books to the next owner, especially in the 3 years before reselling their rental property to that next owner. That potential new owner might decide not to buy because rental income isn't increasing at a steady pace.

Green Bay only has one Meijer's. For more than a week, they had a price reduction on fully cooked rotisserie chicken, ready to eat, for $3 per chicken. Some grocery stores are still selling those at $9 apiece.

Texas 288 commuters could pay $22 per day in tolls. This is a Price Inflation Story.
Sharp increases in tolls along Texas 288 are taking increasing chunks out of commuters’ budgets, with trips now above $1 per mile during peak times.
“I am spending more in tolls than I am in gas each week,” said Pearland commuter Chris Boggiano, 50. “It’s just become too much.” (Not to worry because refineries will soon raise the price so that, once again, you pay more for gas than for tolls.)
Since November 2020, when charging for the toll lanes started, peak trips have roughly doubled in price. A northbound trip at 8 a.m. that initially cost $6.30 now costs $11.51, while a 5 p.m. southbound trip jumped from $5 to $10.59.
The Texas 288 lanes in Harris County are privatized and maintained by Blueridge Transportation Group. The firm, a cabal of investment and construction firms, was awarded a half-century deal in 2016 to build and maintain the lanes along Texas 288 in Harris County.
Blueridge officials did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. (The question should be asked: What is the justification for the price doubling? I already know the true answer: Capitalism. If you don't like that answer, too bad for you. Capitalism doesn't explain to suckers.)

European inflation spikes up in February
Eurostat has issued a flash estimate of the euro area inflation rate for February: it will reach 5.8%, up from 5.1% in January. Here's how that compares to the US:
There are a couple of takeaways from this. First, US and European inflation rates follow each other, so don't be surprised if the February number for the US jumps as well. The BLS will release February CPI figures next week.
Second, we now have a year's worth of data showing that the US inflation rate has been a fairly steady two percentage points above the European rate during the pandemic recovery. This suggests that global issues are responsible for most of our high inflation rate, but that economic policy (i.e., the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill) is probably responsible for adding two percentage points to that.
