Ukraine was an independent nation under Putin. It had its own President, its own Parliament (Rada), military, elections ... It was bound only by a trade association ... there was no Russian governance of Ukraine.

NO. The republics were not "ended", since they NEVER EXISTED as independent nations in the first place. AFA Russian economic performance .... well, let's see how Russia and the USA stack up in real terms.
The USA is in hock up to - and beyond- its ears, to... well, everyone.
The USA has major trade deficits with... well... everyone.
The USA standard of living has been falling for at least 30 years, and the middle class is disappearing.
The USA is de-industrialized and depends on ... well... everyone... for its major industrial chemicals, commodities, and parts.
Infrastructure is crumbling.
The USA is dependent on energy imports... even from Russia!
The USA's so-called "economy" is primarily made of services and the FIRE (finance, insurance, and real estate) sector, which are speculative and non-productive.
A major financial meltdown or loss of confidence in the USD would see much USA "wealth" disappear in a flash, along with a a large chunk of "GDP" which is nothing but funny-money.
Meanwhile, Russia's real economy is growing.
The standard of living is rising.
Russia's debt is 20% of GDP (not 120%, like the USA's) and the government is running a surplus
Russia is energy and food-secure.
Infrastructure is developing.
Seems like we need to manage and measure our economy so that it is something more than bubbles, speculation, and bullshit numbers. If we want to REALLY be independent and secure, we need a base on which to stand. We don't have that, but we should.
