I prefer the PAX kick starter and then Reaver society maintaining it. Many tribes around the world have rituals that can include self-mutilations (ie piercing, scarification, tattoos, and body modification) as well as cannibalism. Most of the traits we see in Reavers can be fond on Earth-that-is, just not all in one single tribe. People can join followings like cults and tribes and do horrendous things buy “normal standards” but are not horrendous by the standards of the group. This will allow for “recruiting” of new Reavers to replace the high mortality rate of the group. There are historical instances of ultra-aggressive behavior of one society to outside influences, especially when influenced with religious fervor. The “kill first, never ask questions” mentality
For another train of thought: maybe the survivor in Bushwacked was already a Reaver. We are never told if he was actually with the homesteaders. Everyone just assumed he was. Maybe he took too long with his meal. Or maybe the whole ambush could have been a rite of passage for “Reaver Men”. A kinda of ”Take over the next ship to prove you’re a man” thing. (interesting if considering Reaver procreation) The Reavers could also have left him as a punishment. “Your not worthy to be with us until you prove yourself to us.” All are very plausible and fit within the story frame we see.
All in all, it makes for an interesting discussion since Reavers are not “aliens”, and cannot be dismissed as such, but men gone bad, really really bad men. It forces us to think about what we are really capable of.

Good point. Perhaps if it were a rite of passage, the reavers were to return after his transformation, and pick him up. That, or he was expected to fly the ship to miranda.

Is that what he's doing, with The Alliance creating Reavers to "justify" its Martial Law Police State?
Heck, ALL the heros on Firefly are crooks (because they were evil in their past lives on BTVS?), so why can't Firefly fans figure out our "leaders" are crooks, too, when they have already been convicted of criminal acts, and are currently sued under RICO Act for perping the 9/11 terrorism? Bush Gang's own published reports - before they were "elected" in 2000 - confess they intended to invade Iraq on a pretext, and that they would need a "new Pearl Harbor event" (PNAC) to trick the public into volunteering for the 15-year-old war, again. Either way, its interesting to reverse-engineer the Joss magic formula for success. It sure beats those lame UN/NWO scripts for Star Treks, except for the universal lack of real-world space physics.

My 2 cents...
This is how I see the events in the 'verse.
1. Alliance Drugs innocent ppl.
2. .1% turn Reaver.
3. Reavers commit unspeakable attrocities...
4. Drug wears off, resistance is developed...
5. Former Innocents, now Reaver are unable to Emotionally "cope" with their own attrocities commited. The Reaver "Culture" is all they have, so it continues.
6. Recruitment happens how we see in Bushwacked.
How do they Fly Spaceships?
Biologically they are still Humans, with the ability to reason, use tools, and walk and chew gum (ears, whatever) at the same time. They still have the same animal insticts they always have had, eat, reproduce, etc. What they accepts as Normal everyday life (i.e. "culture")is what we would consider insane (i.e. Rape, Canabilism, Aggression).
A Reaver Culture would have to exist, otherwise they would just keep killing until only one really fat reaver was standing. Argue as you would like about what this culture is like, but there has to be one. The Fact that reaver Culture is basically to butcher all outsiders and interact in a manner that is unfamiliar would lead Mal to label them as insane.
I would like to think (read speculation) of their culture as a wolfpack that is able to understand and use complex tools. They can communicate and work together for the good of the "Pack". Due to the Amount of death witnessed there is absolutely no fear, or awareness of death. Hence, no worries about radiation shielding (plus the added benifit of fun mutations).
To wrap this up...
They are still human with the humans abilities and knowledge but have been forced to accept a different culture that we see as insane.
Only the half mad are wholly alive!

It seems to me that the reaver attacks are well planned, hmm signs of brains??? Also we have only seen reavers around prey who knows what they are like at home. Just sitting around cuttin' stuff up, maybe play a few card games, and somebody have to sharpen their weapons. Just waiting for a ship to pass by thinkin' 'ah the reaver life'
