BTW, a hijab is a headscarf. Many women like to wear headscarves in cold weather. I myself have a silk one that I could arrange, if I chose, to cover my hair, ind it would be called a hijab.
Back in the day, if you were a Catholic female you wore a head cover to go to church, if only a small lace cap, to indicate modesty. But a man took his hat off to demonstrate humility.
And the habits the nuns wore was very close to a niqab. They still wear something like today

France chooses to resolve that conflict by being secular. Italy, for example, could simply allow Catholic religious symbols and deny other religions. We opt for religious freedom (unless practices require activity that contravenes criminal law, like human sacrifice or slavery.)
But with everyone now required to wear a mask to go anywhere, you'd have a helluva time making a security argument against the burqa/niqab.

I've seen more Muslim women in my life with head coverings than Christian.

All I'm saying is, it's entirely a nation's right to ban one thing and allow the equivalent. Italy could declare itself a Catholic nation, just like Israel has declared itself a Jewish state and other nations have declared themselves Muslim states.
They need not follow our precepts, just as we not need follow theirs. So we can banthe niqab (for example) and require "face coverings" ... nobody said we can't be arbitrary.

Secularism seems to work for a while under some other zealot comes along and starts shouting louder.
