So you could have a blade fully extended and press your full bodyweight into the tip of the knifeblade. Without that locking feature, any other blade would just fold over into it's retracted position, and lopping your finger off in the process. Without the locking feature were Unsafe For Work, a Safety Hazard. But the real SuperTool was completely Safe (when used properly).
After the Original SuperTool, they came out with the SuperTool 2000. And more recently I've seen the SuperTool 3000. These newer ones have fatter handles/grips and some different tools, not really any improvement. The Original is the best. That Christmas I did get all Originals, when they were still available.
The real ones, with locking mechanism, are ALWAYS well worth the price. Used Originals usually sell for more than new ones, becuase Originals are no longer available new.
I just checked the website and saw all the different things they have now. I had no idea there was an "original" and all this other stuff.
I just have a Leatherman. Had it for over 10 years now.
