Good movie.

Sadly... not a great movie, IMO.

I get the feeling the old man liked it quite a bit more than I did.

I feel that it had the potential for greatness. I don't know exactly what it was missing that could have made it great, but I felt that the 2nd act was less interesting than the first and it really fumbled in the final act. I probably would have focused more on the interaction with other players and not put so much emphasis on the love story. I dunno.

Not a bad flick by any stretch, but not something I feel the need to see again any time soon either.

Comer was quite adorable in the flick. Reynolds was charming and funny as always.

I liked how the villian was probably very likely based off of Gen-X slacker extraordinaire Jack Dorsey.

Some Day-After Thoughts...

It's a movie that my old man can watch with my step-mom. In that regard, I do have to say it struck a really good balance between sci-fi and rom-com. My old man told me yesterday after watching the trailers he told her that he thinks it's a movie that they could watch together, and she said "I don't think I could watch a movie that you and Jack like".

Then I told him that he can tell her that I didn't really like it all that much and I think it would be a perfect movie for them to watch together.

I think if I were back in my early 20's again and taking dates to movies it would be a great flick to take a girl to. It's not some terrible and corny rom-com like those dumb Hugh Grant or Katherine Heigl movies were, but it's not so far sci-fi like Oblivion or Edge of Tomorrow that it would turn off somebody like my step-mom who never watches any of the sci-fi that my old man and I enjoy.

It also did a pretty good job of dumbing any of the tech stuff down to the point where my old man found it quite enjoyable even though he hasn't played any video games since Atari was a thing. I know that I knew way more about what was going on in the first act than he ever would have, but it didn't matter. And he didn't need to know that everybody in the "real world" that was talking on YouTube were actually real-life popular YouTubers and he certainly didn't lose anything by not knowing their names.

So... Great flick to watch with your lady... as long as you're not the jealous type and don't mind that she's going to be fantasizing about Ryan Reynolds when it's happy time.

Which films newly released in cinema in 2021 were better?

I'm trying to think if I've seen any. Was Nobody released this year? I liked Nobody more than Free Guy.

Other than that, probably nothing. So much woke shit out there we're swimming in it. I appreciated that except for a few dumb comments they mostly kept that crap out of Free Guy.

It was no Edge of Tomorrow though.

I think I did a better job explaining my thoughts on it with my follow up post from the day after. It was really good if you look at it that way.

Nobody was this year. A different genre than Free Guy, and no Sci Fi to speak of.
So you consider Free Guy to be the 2nd best film of the year for 2021 so far.

Well... I looked at the first 150 releases for this year in ascending order for "popularity" on IMDB and my first thought was that I was shocked this many movies even came out this year.

My second thought was the only other movie I've seen that was released this year was The Tomorrow War, and I didn't really care for that one because everybody in it was so stupid that they deserved what they got.

But then I went to the 4th page and realized that Willie's Wonderland with Nic Cage was released this year and I know I enjoyed that movie more than Free Guy even though it was intentionally terrible and everybody in the movie was stupid and got what they deserved.

If those are the only 4 movies I've seen that came out in 2021, Free Guy gets the third spot.

I doubt very much that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will take its place.

I wonder if the Dune remake would?

OK.
So you proclaim that the 2nd Best Film of the Year is a film which you freely and repeatedly admit is a terrible film.

Got it.

You can't read again today, retard?

Show me where I said it was a terrible flick.

And also, show me where anybody should agree with any so-called movie critic.
