Wow, your argument only works if we’re talking perfection. I am not.
Laser weapons systems are fitted with maps of the ground and location of aircraft as well as orbital parameters of spacecraft. If the beam gets too close to something that you want to avoid, the beam is automatically shut down using a system called predictive avoidance. If it is say a shot from ground to air and its a miss, then the laser energy is lost, dispersed into the atmosphere and into space.
Now THIS is a post dedicated to showing the new laser weapons have no imperfections! They never hit anything or anyone who's unintended! And they always dissipate harmlessly when they miss! Gee, I wonder who posted that claim to perfection, and then denied it??
