Russia Warns U.K. and NATO Next Black Sea Spat Will Be Met With 'Most Severe' Response

A top Russian official has issued a warning to the U.K. and its NATO allies, saying any repeat of an action like that undertaken by the British Navy warship that sailed close to Crimea last month would be met with a "most severe" response.

Poland Just Bought America's M1 Abrams Tank. That's Ironic.

Poland will purchase 250 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks from the U.S., replacing older tanks dating back to the Cold War. The tanks will arm Polish Army units guarding against incursions by the Russian Army.

The Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator, currently exists as a bulky, ground-based demonstrator. However, the Air Force is optimistic that Self-protect High Energy Laser can be shrunk to a small pod that could be tested on an F-15 fighter by this year and eventually integrated also integrated into F-16 and F-35 single-engine fighters. Some sources suggest the system may see its first flight tests on C-17 or C-130 cargo planes.

Lasers are like really, really long-range bullets.

If you fire a bullet in a city or a suburb AND YOU MISS YOUR TARGET, the bullet will for sure hit something or someone else. It's only when you get way out into the rural areas that a bullet might eventually run out of kinetic energy, and fall harmlessly to the ground.

A laser that misses its target could hit something unintended. Maybe a person. Maybe a building. Maybe a civilian aircraft. The only way to TRY to not hit something in the background is to always aim away from the earth, or at the very least above the horizon. I'm sure in combat people will be careful of that. But even if you are careful, of course, you might hit a satellite, or the ISS, or the moon ...

Laser weapons - what a stupid idea.

Laser weapons systems are fitted with maps of the ground and location of aircraft as well as orbital parameters of spacecraft. If the beam gets too close to something that you want to avoid, the beam is automatically shut down using a system called predictive avoidance.

If it is say a shot from ground to air and its a miss, then the laser energy is lost, dispersed into the atmosphere and into space.

Because the computer knows where absolutely everything and everybody is at all times? Is that like the drones that always hit their targets and nothing else? Because lasers disperse so easily in the atmosphere they can bounce laser light off the moon?
