I was excited to see they made a Cowboy Bebop movie, but then I read it and it takes place in between a few episodes of the first and only season.
The ending was... weird.
But in retrospect, it might be the reason that I was left longing for more and I still remember it to this day.
If you watch it, you can come out thinking that it left on a Sara Connor Chronicles level cancellation, but having never looked into it, I wouldn't say that for sure. I could see this ending done intentionally.
I don't remember thinking of Cowboy Bebop at all when I watched Firefly, but I do recall discussions taking place where they said that Joss ripped it off. I didn't take any of those accusations seriously, but you certainly can find parallels between the two series.
I always thought that Joss was far more inspired by Eric Frank Russel's "The Great Explosion", and I always thought of Firefly as a look far into the future of that Universe, with "Legacy of Heorot" taking place some time in between them.
ETA: Come to think of it, Cowboy Bebop could be in that universe as well. It would probably have to be even further into the future than Firefly though since there is no America/China thing going on if memory serves. I'll have to watch it again.

I didn't say the man's work was shit. I loved Spirited Away. The other two I've seen by him were gorgeous, but very much less stellar. What surprised me the most was that Princess Mononoke was the only one I'd heard of before when I thought that it was by far the least impressive of the three.
In the world we find ourselves in today, I would have assumed the reason for this was because the critics and oscar circles applauded Princess Mononoke for being so Stunning and Brave by having a powerful woman leading the flick, but this group of flicks totally turns that notion on its head.
Spirited Away had a CLEAR female lead, both in the roles of protagonist and antagonist. I found this to be the best of the bunch. Howl's Moving Castle could be argued to be a shared male/female role... The titular character was the male and the clear redemption arc, but the female lead was who you were to see through the eyes of.
Princess Mononoke, despite the title, had a clear male lead with the Princess playing supporting cast. The characters were not interesting... at all. It's probably still better than most of the Disney movies coming out since the turn of the century, but I can't see how anybody over 12 years old would really get anything out of it beyond appreciation of the great art style.
I'm still going to be looking into Miyazaki's stuff. But I'm dipping back into his older catalog before he became an Oscar favorite.
And trying to apply "Oscarism" to this situation might be a bit presumptive and unfair on my part. Maybe this is simply the case of a man getting old and losing his touch. It's not like that hasn't happened quite often in Hollywood.

If you're going to watch the 2021 version, I'd definitely watch the cartoon first.
You have every right to believe that they will fumble the shit out of this thing with that being the trend these days.
I'm hopeful that it will be written well though. We certainly have the special effects necessary to recreate the Universe of Cowboy Bebop today, assuming that they have a good enough budget to make it look the part. It will really kill the immersion if their sets are made of cardboard and the special effects look like the crap that the Sci-Fi channel churns out.
I watched the first two episodes yesterday. It's the first time since the early 2000's that I'd seen it, and the first time I'd seen it in HD on a flat screen. I watched them originally on a 27" CRT.
I was kind of blown away by the beauty of the art in Cowboy Bebop. I had no idea it looked that good from my time spent with it on that ancient TV. Of course they use a lot of still frames like many Japan artists do to save on animation budget, but that's part of the charm, IMO. But particularly the art used in space is gorgeous. There's no way that the 2021 live-action series is going to gain any traction if they don't do that justice with some Alita caliber special effects.
And it goes without saying hopefully they keep the woke shit out of it. It would be great if they left politics out of it all together.

Usually the horror genre can be good for cheap indie stuff
A lot of you guys have probably already seen this movie but I have not
I'm going to give the 2018 horror film 'A Quiet Place' a go I hear good hype about it and watched trailers online, upstate New York filmed around NY's Lake Erie Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York on its western, southern, and New York's Lake Erie eastern shores, abandoned factories in NY, maybe shot near Lake Ontario.. so it is Indie and outside of Hollywood, I think it made a lot of money and has a cult following and seems to have instesting use of sounds, monsters or lack of sounds.
It porbably cost more than 10+ Million so I'm not sure if it fits in that "Under 15 Million" parameters...but it was Low Budget if I remember reading about it.
Even if its B-movie crap I will probably enjoy it for the effort they put in

My tastes have changed extremely since I was a kid. Horror B flicks was almost exclusively what my friends, brothers and I watched growing up.
But today, getting me to watch a horror flick is an almost impossible task. The last actually good one I saw was The Ring, and the last one I found entertaining for the spectacle of it all and how much it made on peanuts was the original Paranormal Activity.
There's just so much garbage out there in that category. There always was, but I feel that back in the 70's to the mid 90's or so there was also a much different feel to the production of it all.
I'm sure there are a lot of factors at play (even acknowledging that a large factor is personal taste), but the genre has lost its charm.
With rare exception (like The Ring), we all know going into a horror flick that we're about to watch something that is going to be bad... but rather than derive pleasure out of the terribleness of the flick, I usually just walk away wishing I could have that 90 minutes back and do something else with the time.

I really don't know if I, Tonya was a low budget or independent film, but I enjoyed it a lot. Margot Robbie was awesome in it, and her surrounding entourage of incredibly stupid people, makes it a memorable dark comedy. I also liked Black Klansman.
