Most Bay Area folk know the oft-repeated fact that the Colma has more dead bodies than living ones — it's true and it's not even close. The town, formed in 1924 as one of America's only necropolises, has a living population of about 1,700, but entombs about 1.5 million bodies.

When the San Francisco Columbarium was built in 1897, the grand neoclassical repository for human ashes stood in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, one of four huge cemeteries in the Inner Richmond — Laurel Hill to the north, Odd Fellows to the west, Masonic to the south, and Calvary to the east. The cemeteries were filled with bodies not long after they were established, and the Columbarium provided an efficient way to house deceased San Franciscans.

Odd Fellows was in fact one of 30 cemeteries in San Francisco at the time — these included a Jewish cemetery at what is now Dolores Park, the vast Golden Gate Cemetery near Land's End, and the city's first graveyard, Yerba Buena Cemetery, located at what is now Civic Center BART.
1900s San Francisco was not a clean place, and the acres of cemeteries were not safe or sanitary. Most of the sites already had no room for more bodies, and coffins were not always used, leading to some archival reports of kids finding body parts while playing among the headstones and mausoleums.
One of the more curious concerns among residents was the eerie goings on at the Chinese cemetery near Point Lobos. The story goes that to provide sustenance to the spirits, Chinese residents would often leave delicacies and meat on the gravestones of loved ones during funerals. Opportunistic vagrants would walk the cemetery at night and feast on the offerings.
As Charles Caldwell Dobie's 1933 book "San Francisco: A Pageant" described, “In a bygone day, the cemetery was the haunt of ghoul-like hoboes who regaled them-selves on roast pig and sweetmeats once the funeral cortege had disappeared.”(That cemetery is now Lincoln Park Golf Course, and while the meat-strewn graves are long gone, Chinese tombstones are still visible on the 1st and 13th fairways.)

The problem became a major point of contention at the time, and in 1900, Mayor James D. Phelan signed an order "prohibiting the burial of the dead within the city and county of San Francisco."
It was officially illegal to get buried in San Francisco. Or as a later Examiner story read, "Burial became as unlawful as peddling dope on Eddy Street."
The newspapers wrote of skeletons being stolen and the city's poor camping out above the dead. Column inches sensationalized the issue to fuel development on the land. Headlines included "Criminal element resorts to burial grounds," and even "Vaults now headquarters for dope fiends."

I remember those hats.

My grandma knew a Shriner from church and I have vague memories of going to Downtown Chicago to the Medinah Temple to see the Shriner's Circus a few times. Pretty exciting for a little kid. I remember being able to reach out and pet an elephant. Crazy to think how they even got an elephant in there. That building was beautiful. Probably a lot smaller than I remember it from the mind of a child.

Nobody touched my butt while I was there.

Paris-based Frederick Vaglio, 50, the former boss of a security firm, is currently on remand and facing life in prison for running a contract killing business.



Members of the Athanor Gang — named after his Paris Freemasons lodge — are said to have confessed to involvement in contract killings and spying on and assaulting victims.


In February, it emerged that bullets compatible with the Swiss-made pre-World War Two Luger P06 pistol used in the Alps murders were found at Vaglio’s home.
Said to be a former member of French spy agency the Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence, Vaglio was born in Annecy and had business links there.
Company records show he set up a PR firm in the town in 2009, which was wound up days before the al-Hillis were gunned down in September 2012.
Vaglio then formed a security and corporate intelligence firm called Meliora in 2016, registered to his parents’ address in the town.
Neighbours at his last known address in Paris recalled “a lot of cars coming and going, often with military types in them” and heard gunshots coming from the property.
Prosecution documents say Vaglio was offered £64,000 by a fellow Freemason to set up an attack on Marie-Helene Dini, a 55-year-old therapist and business coach.
?Two former French security service guards were allegedly hired to kill her, but were arrested in a car outside her home last July armed with knives and a gun.
Vaglio is among nine people in custody over the alleged contract and he has also been probed about the £10,000 contract killing of French racing driver Laurent Pasquali, 43, over debts in 2018.
But it is his gang’s alleged link to another layby bloodbath that has triggered the most interest from Annecy investigators.
In a virtual carbon copy killing, French ex-secret serviceman Daniel Forestier was shot at a remote layby around 35 miles away, near Marcorens, France, in March 2019.
He was killed by a 9mm semi-automatic gun of the same calibre of weapon used on the al-Hillis.
