I wonder what she'll do when she finishes this. The other Firefly crew? not as many outfits or as glamorous, but maybe still fun.

Maybe programs for storyboarding our own firefly scenes. Open source software and people could come up with new outfits for the characters too.

It took me forever to get the embroidery right. I restarted from scratch about three times, till I figured out the right way to tackle it, but I think it turned out pretty well.

Mal (captain of the Serenity): You shoulda seen her face when I told her she could have that layer cake she's wearin.'
Inara: I think she looks adorable.
Mal: Yeah. But I never said it.

For my Ladies Of Firefly: Mighty Fine Shindig! set, here is my take on Kaywinneth Lee Frye's dress for the Grand Celebration on Persephone. It's the dress that launched a thousand cosplays, Kaylee's "layer cake" dress. Seriously just Google "kaylee shindig dress" and look at all the results, lol.

This one was absolutely, positively edited in Gimp using five different colors of the same dress layered on top of one another and painstakingly erasing bits of each layer. I had intended to add an extra ruffle to each color tier to match the RL dress, but by the time I got done with the incredible amount of detail erasing, I was too sick of looking at it to go through with the original plan. Still, I think I managed to capture the spirit of the original, and I made sure to include a nice fat strawberry for her. :)

Shindig is the fourth episode of Firefly's one and only season, and it's actually the first episode that a lot of fans saw according to the personal anecdotes I have gathered. Since it was my first episode, as well, and the one that had me fascinated by and hooked on the show from the very start. I loved the Western elements in a sci-fi setting and the idea of having a sci-fi TV show that was about the characters instead of the technology. There was no endless technobabble, there were no unflattering unitards, the Reavers were a HELLUVA lot scary than the Borg could ever hope to be, there were no lasers or aliens or mystical space wizards. What it did have was thrilling heroics, quippy dialogue, intrigue and mystery (just who was Shepherd Book, anyway?), and as Star Wars had done a quarter of a century before, Firefly gave us locations and spaces that look lived in.

It was a fabulous show gone too soon. Browncoats forever!

For my Ladies Of Firefly: Mighty Fine Shindig! set, here is my take on what Companion Inara Serra wore to the Grand Celebration on Persephone. Inara's dress was made of heavily embroidered pale gold Indian jacquard silk, and the sleeves and top part of the bodice are silk jersey dyed to match.

I must admit that as many times as I have seen this episode, it's actually hard to tell on screen that the dress is embroidered on the skirt, and the color appears much more cream on film. Regardless, its a dress that set many a cosplayer's heart a-fluttering and made us dream of having such a beautiful piece.

Zoe Washburne: Too much foofarah. If I’m gonna wear a dress I want something with some slink.
Hoban Washburne (her husband): You want a slinky dress? I can buy you a slinky dress. Captain, can I have money for a slinky dress?

For my Ladies Of Firefly: Mighty Fine Shindig! set, here is my take on what Zoe, first mate of the Firefly-class ship Serenity, would have worn to the Grand Celebration on Persephone.

“No rutting tests? Stupid son of a bitch, dress me up like a gorramn doll!” – River

For my Ladies Of Firefly: Mighty Fine Shindig! set, here is my take on what River Tam, genius little sister of Dr. Simon Tam would have worn to the Grand Celebration on Persephone. If you recognize the quote above, you probably know that it comes from episode 5, "Safe." This dress is based on that dress and sweater River wears in the episode solely because it's the first time we see her let loose and dance, picking up the steps after watching the villagers make just one pass around the stage. Naturally, being River, the fancy dress doesn't mean she takes off her big boots. Of course, they are probably the only shoes she has.

Simon Tam (about his sister): “Yes...she always did love to dance.”

For my Ladies Of Firefly: Mighty Fine Shindig! set, here is my take on what River Tam, genius little sister of Dr. Simon Tam would have worn to the Grand Celebration on Persephone. This is actually a 2nd take I did on a dress for River back when I thought that I would put all 4 ladies in one picture together, and I wanted a little variation in the color because Kaylee's dress is SO pink.

I imagine this is something Inara had lying around, and the bodice on top is likely a bed jacket, but River loved it and insisted on wearing it. Naturally, being River, the fancy dress doesn't mean she takes off her big boots. Of course, they are probably the only shoes she has.

It's con season, so I've been looking at panels from Dragon Con (my home convention) and others, specifically panels with the cast of "Firefly." Feeling nostalgic, I made versions of the ladies from the show. [If you don't know what "Firefly" is/was, see below]

L-R are Zoe Alleyne Washburne, the first mate and Captain Reynolds' oldest and truest friend; Inara Serra, who is a licensed Companion, and therefore holds a high social rank (much higher than the rest of the crew) and is probably the most thoroughly educated person on the ship; Kaywinnet Lee Frye ("Kaylee"), the brilliant ship's mechanic and the eternally cheerful "little sister" to the crew; River Tam, a genius-level teenager and younger sister to the ship's doctor, River was in a government facility where she was experimented on repeatedly until her brother risked everything to bust her out.

Firefly is a science fiction television series conceived by writer and director Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. among many others) that premiered in the United States and Canada on September 20, 2002. Set 500 years in the future, it is a science fiction Western, using elements of both genres. “Star Trek” may have originally been pitched as “Wagon Train in the stars,” but Firefly actually was that.

Though the show had a loyal following during its original broadcast, Firefly was promoted as an action-comedy rather than the more serious character study it was intended to be; episodes were occasionally pre-empted for sporting events, and the episodes were not aired in the order that the creators had intended. Most notably, the two-hour episode "Serenity" was intended to be the pilot episode, as it contains most of the character introductions and back-story. However, FOX decided that Serenity did not have enough of the sci fi action adventure they wanted in a pilot, and so the second episode, "The Train Job", was rushed into production to become the pilot episode, leaving viewers confused as to who these people were and why they were even working together.

The series was canceled by FOX in December 2002 after 11 episodes shown in the USA and Canada. Low ratings were blamed for the cancellation. Joss Whedon claims that it was also very likely the cost of the show that factored into the decision, and the network heads were never comfortable with the idea of spaceships and hovercrafts alongside horses and cows, and no aliens, laser guns, or loud explosions in space that you usually get with your typical sci fi adventure show. (All of Firefly’s space scenes are silent with only music in the background.)

Whedon eventually persuaded Universal Studios to produce a feature film, Serenity. (The title of Serenity was chosen, according to Whedon, because Fox still owned the rights to the name 'Firefly'). Numerous early screenings were held for existing fans in an attempt to create a buzz and increase ticket sales when it was released widely on September 30, 2005. The film was not as commercially successful as fans had hoped, opening at number two and making only $40 million worldwide during its initial theatrical rele
