Excuse me. We are an extraterrestrial civilization to other planets are we not? When you look at the vastness of the Universe, only arrogance would allow us to believe the knowledge we have suggests anything other than life exists elsewhere.

I don't think anybody here is saying that extraterrestrial life doesn't exist.
I don't mean to speak for anybody else who's posted in this thread, so speak up if I'm wrong, but I think the point is that there is a near nil chance that any civilization would become so technologically advanced that they could safely engage in interstellar travel yet manage not to have already suffered an extinction level event... either by their own hands or a fluke accident.
