Quote:What I would like to see is the lower 99% start acting with as much commonsense as the Top 1%. I know that not nearly all of the Top 1% act like they have sense and not all of the bottom 99% are completely lacking sense, but the bottom tends to be pretty damn gullible and foolish in their everyday lives. Why would the bottom's politics not tend toward foolishness? When the bottom finally revolts, I don't expect them to show much sense in how they use their new found power, which brings us right back to why the Top 1% are in the top -- they do, on average, but not all of them, show good sense and can make big plans and follow plans to completion. Not too many people are mentally capable of making big or even little plans. Sadly, they lose focus, or lose courage, or watch too much TV, or goof off in general.

I agree - the 99% have never tested the power of the vote. And I would very like to see what would happen if we did.
But I suspect if we did the US would have a REAL coup - like in Myanmar - instead of the (giggle giggle) 'coup' in Washington a few weeks ago that everyone is fainting over.
In the Jan 6th coup, Trump told rioters to stop V.P. Mike Pence from certifying the vote. Neither Trump nor the rioters showed commonsense or even rudimentary ability to plan coherently, but Trump (and the Trumptards I personally know) have always been scatterbrained. That's why they failed in their mission to keep Trump as President. Trump is like a bank robber who dropped his bag of loot as he ran away. Now Trump and his lawyers will claim at the impeachment trial that there was no robbery. About 45 Republican Senators will agree that dropping the bag means the bank wasn't intentionally robbed, hence Trump is not guilty of anything more serious than boorishness.

It's called Zipf's Law, dipshit.
Just like if the word "the" was banned, some other word would take it's place as the most commonly used word constituting 7% of all words spoken or written, if the entire system were to be burned to the ground a vacuum would be created where a brand new 1% would eventually control everything.
You don't even have to play make believe to theorize this. Just look at any third world shithole and what goes on after we fund a coup and help out with some drone strikes.

Starting about 500 years ago, from Mexico all the way to Argentina, European diseases killed off the Top 1% of society. With what was left of the Top 1% decapitated by Conquistadors, the next best people did NOT have the mental fortitude it takes to keep society running. Those civilizations left their ruins for tourists. The decedents of the Latin American 99% are living very poorly, making careers as tour guides, waiters, maids or picking bananas in the Banana Republics. Nobody from the lower levels of society stepped up to take the responsibilities that had been handled by the Top 1%.
6ix, Zipf's law does not explain Latin America's continuous collapse that has lasted for centuries, but killing the brains of a society does have explanatory power. If you think the USA can prosper without the people that are now in the Top 1%, you will end up with a life like a Central American peon ruled by a Banana Republic El Presidente Trump.

Quote:Yanno, I googled the topic - not using your link - and the top pick answers were Jared Diamond's "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Survive", but it could as well have been his "Guns, Germs, and Steel" when it comes to Europeans v the western indigenous peoples. (I've read both books - have you?)

And NOBODY who knows anything even begins to credit this statement with any credibility at all:
Quote:Virtually entire functioning societies were felled by European diseases.
Starting about 500 years ago, from Mexico all the way to Argentina, European diseases killed off the Top 1% of society.
Quote:leaving you high and dry with your claim
It is estimated that 90% of the indigenous population had been eliminated by disease within the first century of European contact. WIKI
Quote:So, not true, but killing up to 90% of entire populations does have explanatory power.
killing the brains of a society does have explanatory power
Yet another whole set of lies posted by SECOND. As flamebait rather than actual discussion.
What a surprise. Not.

Quote:Almost everyone supports Medicare for All and ending our foreign wars. But we never get candidates who make good on that. Only the small portion of libertarians fuss about "government's role" ... hardly enuf to make a dent in any election. And you can bet YOUR bottom dollar that it's the bottom-feeding 1% that keeps this "controversy" alive and well, not the top 99%.

Since WWII, maybe even before that, the Top 1% have ever so slowly, and then faster and faster, shifted their decisions to benefit themselves more and more while benefiting the bottom 99% less and less. The expectation was that the Federal government would step up to the responsibility as the Top 1% stepped down, in the same way as the Federal government took responsibility for ending the Great Depression. The Top 1% have watched with bemusement as the voters in the bottom 99% have squabbled over the size of Federal government's role in looking after the bottom 99%.

Too many voters can't understand that it is either the Federal government or else nobody will be taking over the responsibilities that once rested exclusively on the shoulders of the wealthy. All this squabbling by voters has kept the Federal government from properly taking over the responsibilities that most of the Top 1% have left behind. Christopher Lasch even wrote the book about this process called The Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy.
Do I want the government to take over the role of being the big leech on the carotid of the economy?
OF COURSE NOT.
What I want the government to do is take a proactive role in limiting the powers of TPTB, leveling the playing field, and reducing the parasitism of the top 1%.
