Our computer climate models could be missing something big.
During the entire half-billion-year Phanerozoic eon of animal life, CO2 has been the primary driver of the Earth’s climate. And sometimes, when the planet has issued a truly titanic slug of CO2 into the atmosphere, things have gone horribly wrong.
Today, humans are injecting CO2 into the atmosphere at one of the fastest rates ever. When hucksters tell you that the climate is always changing, they’re right, but that’s not the good news they think it is. “The climate system is an angry beast,” the late Columbia climate scientist Wally Broecker was fond of saying, “and we are poking it with sticks.”
The beast has only just begun to snarl. All of recorded human history — at only a few thousand years, a mere eyeblink in geologic time — has played out in perhaps the most stable climate window of the past 650,000 years. We have been shielded from the climate’s violence by our short civilizational memory, and our remarkably good fortune. But humanity’s ongoing chemistry experiment on our planet could push the climate well beyond those slim historical parameters, into a state it hasn’t seen in tens of millions of years . . .
When there’s been as much carbon dioxide in the air as there already is today — not to mention how much there’s likely to be in 50 or 100 years — the world has been much, much warmer, with seas 70 feet higher than they are today. Why? The planet today is not yet in equilibrium with the warped atmosphere that industrial civilization has so recently created. If CO2 stays at its current levels, much less steadily increases, it will take centuries — even millennia — for the planet to fully find its new footing. The transition will be punishing in the near term and the long term, and when it’s over, Earth will look far different from the one that nursed humanity. This is the grim lesson of paleoclimatology: The planet seems to respond far more aggressively to small provocations than it’s been projected to by many of our models.
To truly appreciate the coming changes to our planet, we need to plumb the history of climate change. So let us take a trip back into deep time, a journey that will begin with the familiar climate of recorded history and end in the feverish, high-CO2 greenhouse of the early age of mammals, 50 million years ago. It is a sobering journey, one that warns of catastrophic surprises that may be in store.

So, have you figured out where you went wrong in understanding my post?
You seem to think that I'm some sort of Republican grinch who barely peel a dollar offa wad of cash to better anyone's life.
What you failed to understand is that EVERYTHING that I posted about: retrofitting homes, rebuilding infrastructure, teaching and healing, environmental stewardship ... even investing in factories and steel mills and cement plants, if private investors fail to show up ... takes government money.
LOTS of government money. It's not that I'm unwilling to tax the wealthy to spend government money. And it's not that I don't want to reduce the wealth gap ... of course I do! And it's not that I don't want people's lives to be better ... of course I do!
But you don't reduce poverty by HANDOUTS. You reduce poverty by changing the rules of the game, by rewarding work, not speculation or rentier capitalism or monopolism.
You have never understood my signature, have you?

There will always be some who will need more than they can immediately return to society: the very young, the very old, the sick and the disabled. But MOST people are able to create a good life for themselves and their families if the deck wasn't already stacked against them. And that deck-stacking ... it's not natural or inevitable, it was a conscious choice made by the wealthy who gained control of government and changed the rules of the game to favor themselves.
It's really obvious. A bright guy like you claim to be should be able to see this.

Methane is pitting Texas against the Biden administration
Methane is 80 times more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. But in Texas, methane is so plentiful and cheap, it escapes largely unseen and unmeasured. In the Permian Basin, operators are leaking enough methane to heat about 2 million homes a year. The methane leaks from faulty equipment or the tens of thousands of orphaned wells.
Trump tried to remove all regulations on methane, a move so extreme that even ExxonMobil opposed it. But until President Joe Biden's Environmental Protection Agency can navigate the legal booby traps left by the Trump administration's giveaways to methane leakers, it is up to oil and gas companies to fix a problem no one can see or smell.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has fired the first shot in a methane civil war of 2021. "I'm in Midland to make clear that Texas is going to protect the oil and gas industry from any type of hostile attack launched from Washington, DC," Abbott said, days after Biden signed his first round of executive orders aimed at a climate in crisis.
Then the Republican governor signed an executive order of his own, commanding every state agency to bring him every reason to sue and stop the Biden administration's clean energy efforts. In calling out cities like San Francisco, where a movement to ban natural gas heaters and appliances from new construction is growing, Abbott vowed to ban all bans.
"In Texas, we will not let cities use political correctness to dictate what energy source you use," he said. "So I am supporting legislation that prohibits cities and counties from banning natural gas appliances."
Kelsey Robinson of the Environmental Defense Fund has a simple idea. "Reducing methane emissions is actually a job creator in and of itself because we need people to go out to survey these sites and then take steps to fix those leaks."
Without enforceable regulations for producers big and small, the profit motive always wins. ExxonMobil and some of the other big producers have set lofty goals for how they want to keep their emissions. But in the Permian Basin, the methane leak rate is over 10 times higher than what a lot of companies have set out to do.
