Smallpox and polio were deeply feared even though the infection rates and death rates were extremely small compared to COVID-19.
For example "In the United States, the 1952 polio epidemic was the worst outbreak in the nation's history, and is credited with heightening parents’ fears of the disease and focusing public awareness on the need for a vaccine.[24] Of the 57,628 cases reported that year 3,145 died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis." ed-states/ with a case fatality rate of roughly 30% https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/vaccines/smallpox , for a calculated number of 33,300 deaths.
I believe so much fear was evoked because survivors carried permanent effects like paralysis and severe scarring, including blindness due to eyeball scars. Nobody wanted to live the rest of their life in an iron lung, or scarred and blind.
The worst affected COVID-19 patients die and disappear. They don't serve as a reminder of what COVID-19 does to you. And while survivors can struggle with immediate after-effects, their struggle is invisible. And it'll take years before we grasp the long-term outcomes on hearts, lungs, kidneys, brains, etc. It'll be years before we see cardiac cripples rolling on wheelchairs with oxygen hooked up because their hearts can't sustain normal activity (for example), or pulmonary cripples, and look at them and think 'yes, that's another victim of COVID-19'.
In any case, it remains true that COVID-19 CAN be eradicated, like other select other viral diseases without an environmental reservoir, through vaccination.

Cats and dogz being infected with C19 hav alredy been reported. And it suppozedly came from bats via pangolinz.
I am pretty sure its in the racoonz around my house. The few that hav shown up on my porch this winter ate little or nothing. I woct wun sniff at a cookie and leav! Racoonz, like many animalz, will not eat sumthing they cant smell. Lak uv taste and smell iz a common symptom uv C19.
Usually during the winter on warmer dayz the racoonz will be on my porch gobbling up the dog food and cookiez I put out for them to replenish their hibernation fat. I suspect many uv them may be ded now.

When it comes to animals, the question isn't 'can they get it' but 'can they infect people'. Most animals have lungs that are too small to cause any serious level of infection, for the same reason children don't seem to infect adults all that much (which, I admit, like a lot of things about the virus needs confirmation). So one would have to be very stupid with animals - lots of close contact - before one catches a virus.
That said, when it comes to the original SARS and MERS, some people are very stupid with animals.
