That's a tricky one though. Pretty sure whoever came up with the word originally wasn't a spelling bee champion themselves, and it looks like when the papers started putting it into print they were all over the map with the spelling. (I'd love to know the first use of it as slang for whore though, and if it were scratched down on a napkin as song lyrics that napkin would probably be worth quite a bit in 2021).

The "Imus" story isn't where I would have gone to research it. It was in rap songs many years before he got canned. But maybe they went there because it was the first time the word was really ever put into print.
So people in California might use Hos because the SFC used set precedent with it there while people in Indiana might use Hoes because Chicago Tribune set precedent with it here. Or maybe it's just one of those words that on the rare occasion that anybody spells it they just put whatever. (Personally, I didn't really know myself before I just looked it up).
I think everybody is right here. And at the same time everybody is very, very wrong.
All I know is I didn't have to bring this up when my grandma played "Ho" in Up Words, and I later played "Hoe" on that. They were both words in the dictionary long before Luda or Imus used it. So I was able to keep my immature Beavis and Butt-Head laughter on the inside and move on.
