I'm going to leave the cart properly behind the horse for a week or so, but I think it's undeniable that no incumbent president ever has had as strong a motivation to stay in office as this president* does. If he loses, it is better-than-even odds that he ends up in the sneezer. He damn sure will find himself, as my pal Bill Livingston in Cleveland puts it, riding every ride in Depositionland. Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, already seems to have cleared a spot for his head on her office wall, and certain federal jurisdictions are fairly itching to get out from under the regime of William Barr and get back to the business of prosecuting crimes. He knows it, too, if the New York Times is to be believed.

Unfortunately for Trump, if he loses the 2020 election, he’ll no longer be able to use the staff of the Justice Department as his personal lawyers. That’s a worrisome thing for a guy who’s potentially committed numerous crimes, and we know this because Trump is reportedly soiling himself in fear over what he might be prosecuted for, and maybe go to jail over, after he leaves office.
The world awaiting Trump when and if he loses the election is a dark one because he’ll no longer have a taxpayer-funded staff at his disposal to lie for him.
