The facts are: democrats did nothing for the average worker during the Obama presidency; Hillary and the DNC were all about identity politics as long as you had the right identity; Pelosi as the single most visible representative of democrats in the last 4 years has made the democrats all about being anti-Donald; and the party platform of today is meaningless happy-talk without a commitment to identify and solve the causes of the average American's economic malady.
Democrats can't even pay decent lip service to ordinary Americans and their economic misfortunes.
No amount of Trump-demonizing is going to change the perception that democrats can't even pretend to address our economy that's failed everyday Americans.
So, to get back to what Trump is doing that democrats seem completely blind to - he's got Jerome Powell and Steve Mnuchin on the line to pump up the stock market, because politically, he can't afford a crash. Democrats will be facing the headwind of a good stock market and the normalcy and stability that projects (no matter how bad the fundamentals).

Americans are NOT judging how well one party was doing when they switch to supporting the other party. Americans just switch because they are tired and the other side promised that this time would be nothing like the last time they were in control. Back and forth control goes between the two parties while most Americans can't even remember the characteristics are different between the two parties. And most stunning, almost no Americans can remember that it takes not 51 Senators, but at least 60 Senators, in some cases 67 Senators, to get anything important passed. The Senate was designed to make sure major legislation does not pass but once in a generation when one party has a super-majority.

Not sure why you're so stuck on pretending that Congress = the Senate, or that the US government = Congress.
Here's a complete picture.
Until you decide to address the complete picture, with all the dates it covers as well as the the complete legislative branch plus the executive branch, I don't see a point in discussing the "American voter" any further.

The whole notion that Trump won just because republicans are racist, sexist, xenophobic pigs was disproven by the 2016 primaries. The Tea Party already had that territory covered in every shade of discrimination you can imagine, with 'small government-mania' as an extra. What it never did was address the economic malaise of working people, and of the country, because they too were - and are - beholden to their big-money donors. THAT's what put Trump over the top in the primaries and the general election. It wasn't the culture war issues, it was the bad economy, that nobody else was addressing.
Until democrats get their act together (assuming they ever clue in, that is) and AT LEAST pay better-sounding lip-service to people's economic distresses, the democrats will continue to fail.
In the meantime, that the democrats are STILL staking their viability on identity politics - at least we're not republicans - or TRUMP! - is a big mistake. Many people see NOT being Trump as the problem, not the solution.
Democrats need to focus on the problems that matter to people, and their blame-free white-wash weak-tea "Build Back Better" that doesn't identify the causes of economic distress isn't going to cut it.

By my reckoning, the more or less solidly reality-based are a minority, maybe a third of us but almost certainly fewer than half. Only a third of us, for instance, believe with some certainty that CO2 emissions from cars and factories are the main cause of Earth’s warming. When I say that a third believe X or a quarter believe Y, it’s important to understand that those are different thirds and quarters of the U.S. population. Various fantasy constituencies overlap and feed each other—for instance, belief in extraterrestrial visitation and abduction can lead to belief in vast government cover-ups, which can lead to belief in still more wide-ranging plots and cabals, which can jibe with a belief in an impending Armageddon involving Jesus. Fantasyland operates like the European Union, a collection of disparate domains of various sizes overlaid with a Schengen Area that allows citizens of any of the dozens of lands to travel freely among the others, the way Hungarians and Maltese can visit France or Iceland at will.
Why are we like this?
That’s what this book will explore. The short answer is because we’re Americans, because being American means we can believe any damn thing we want, that our beliefs are equal or superior to anyone else’s, experts be damned.
