So, just to get to what I think about racism and black-on-black violence:
When you have a group that is economically isolated from, and disadvantaged in relation to, the larger economy, and that doesn't have a strong social structure, you will get violence. Especially in a culture that lauds wealth, greed, ownership/consumerism, and competition over anything else.
It's not a "black" thing. There were fierce Irish gangs in NYC, and Mafia ties in Italian populations. There are Vietnamese street gangs in Orange County, and Hispanic gangs in much of the south/west. There are Iraqi, Somali, Afghani etc gangs in the refugee settlements in the EU, where people are separated from the main culture by language.
Some groups- Irish, Poles, Italians, Jews ... were eventually assimilated. But individual blacks have been historically frozen out ... of good jobs, nice neighborhoods, good schools etc ... because of color. The bar that blacks - men in particular- have to meet is higher. Loan rates are higher. Rentals harder to come by. Wages are lower. There is a persistent winnowing of blacks out of the rewards of the greater economy and society due to persistent racism.
In addition, the "black community" (personally, I don't think there is such a thing) has suffered from the corrosive effects of "welfare as we know it" which kicked black men out of the family and encouraged a parasitic relationship with government; and it has absorbed the most destructive aspects of our current culture- rampant consumerism, greed, and fierce competition for limited resources, including jobs. All of this has combined into a toxic stew of people who have been trained over decades by lack of acceptance to hate the system and to reject hard work, education, family-mindedness, and responsibility, and civility. There are only so many times that people can collectively fruitlessly bang their heads against the same wall until they give up.
OTOH, let's assume that we magically get rid of racism, and institute a technocratic society (for the masses) where education and work are rewarded strictly on the basis of performance. (The elite, of course, are never judged on their productivity and contribution to society, so I leave them out of this picture.)
Over time, black school performance no longer suffers from the "soft bigotry of low expectations" and blacks achieve a truly equal status with whites.
Has that solved our problem of poverty?
Or will there still be a large -but racially diverse!- underclass who aren't able to compete for scarce jobs?
Blacks aren't the only ones who've been victimized. Every laborer, everyone who worked in a steel plant or auto manufacturing plant, or in textiles, or on a small family farm, or assembly line, or any of the myriad of production jobs has been sucked dry by our current economy, which is why the middle class in general has collapsed, not just blacks.
Ending racism is NECESSARY BUT NOT SUFFICIENT to solving our social and economic problems.
