I spent about 5 to 10 weekends up there per summer over 5 or 6 years in a little town with 250 people about 30 miles from the lake and a tourist attraction city.
Not sure I got the full Michigan experience that would let me in on the cannon or wolf thing.
By offspring I'm assuming you're asking me if we actually owned a wolf? lol nope.
No cannons either, I'm afraid. My mom came from a huge Democrat family and we considered ourselves lucky to even be able to get BB guns for Christmas because our step dad wanted us to have them.

I loved the TV show Due South, where the lead character (Constable Fraser, RCMP) has a pet wolf (Defenbaker) and he is stationed in Chicago.
A lot of Michiganders get a cannon just because it is one of the few places where Americans are allowed to.
