I've seen Gone with the Wind - twice - and each time I thought it was about crazy people with peculiar notions being phonies, and making really bad decisions because they were living in fantasy-land. In other words, I saw it as a great negative example of what not to do.
I guess we all take our different lessons from it.

Yeah, the opening prologue was pretty hard to take seriously, too. It was SO overblown and just plain stupid it sounded like it was lampooning the Old South.
I'm sure some people took it seriously. I just couldn't.

I'm not sure men watched it much. It was basically what my cousin used to call a bodice-ripper - a torrid historically set romance. I suspect most women didn't care about the predicate, they just wanted to watch Clark Gable do some manly swearing. Be still my beating heart !!!
