Hey... as long as you don't destroy yourself while you're not married, it sure is a good way to live.
Grass is always greener though.
I tell my married friends that even though I wouldn't trade the freedom of being single for anything, they should appreciate their wives for keeping them more or less in line. All of my married friends seem to have skipped the whole self-destruction phase in their life, and not too many of the unmarried ones ever came back from that. My own story is littered all over these boards, and it wasn't pretty.
It's actually somewhat difficult to maintain focus and ambition and not succumb to idle-hands syndrome and all that entails when you don't have somebody constantly nagging at you and you find yourself living a life absent of the responsibility that most other people your age have.
Can't speak for what it was like to be married 50 or more years ago, but from the outside looking in it seems these days that most guys getting married just need to keep a mom figure in their life. I mean, that's essentially what a wife is after the honeymoon phase is over.
Do Right, Be Right. :)

I agree with you on something for once!

Now, you wanna discuss the reasons why a lotta men would need a "mommy" and why women would generally be more responsible??
I'm guessing not....

Women in general have a better sense of self preservation than men. It's in the genetic code.
Until recently, making sure their man stayed healthy and strong was in a woman's best interest. They've got other options now though, via alimony, child support and government programs.
The US Government is Daddy to a lot of kids these days.

I agree with SIX. Evolutionarily, female reproduction is the rate-limiting step for many animals (mammals in particular). Most males in many species are redundant, unless they also feed the young (like many birds). It's beneficial for the species if superfluous males risk and die ... fewer mouths to feed, more food for the young! That's what "intraspecies competition" is all about. But if females were equally risk-taking it would be species suicide.

There are exceptions though. Orcas, dolphins, bonobos that I can think of off the top of my head.

Is the exception to redundant males being gotten rid of (somehow) or to females being more risk averse than males, or both?
I know that orca pods are headed by females. Also elephant herds. I think bonobos as well. OTOH I don't know the dophin hierarchy. (btw Dolphins perform what looks like gang-rape when mating.)

Yup. In a true end-of-the-world scenario, we'd be a much better chance surviving if there were 5 men and 50 women than if there were 5 women and 50 men.
We all need agency, but it's not a coincidence that in times of high unemployment the suicide rate increases are staggeringly slanted on the male side.
