Remember when 15,000 the top?
It's all monopoly money anyway. This is just another large chunk of money being ripped away from the average people that will ultimately end up in the hands of the few. Happens every time.

Its 10:43am (central) and the Dow haz been down to 19808.
Still not time to start buying. Trump iz continuing to inspire no confidens.
If you go by the theory that Putin haz a vast team uv straw men doing a pump & dump, stocks will start gaining this afternoon, 1,000, 2,000 or so, then open way down agen tomorow.

“Since my election, U.S. stock markets have soared 70 percent,” President Trump bragged at his State of the Union address in Feb 2020, before claiming that this bull market was “transcending anything anyone believed was possible.”
Those gains are gone.
On January 19, 2017, the day before Trump took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,804.72. The Dow has dropped below that level.
The rise in stock prices Trump touted so recently — and that he hoped to ride into this November’s election — no longer exists.

I still have not heard a solid reason for why they can't just suspend trading for more than 15 minutes. 2008 anyone? Did that not happen? We're suspending everything else.
The prez of the NYSE was interviewed live on tv yesterday and did not make me a believer when asked the same question, just more flimsy double speak - like the Truth would be too dangerous to reveal or too much for us to handle. "Well, in truth it's all smoke and mirrors and probably the worst place for anyone to put any savings, especially their life's savings!"

Quote:We're not talking about penny stocks from soon to be worthless companies. Every time the S&P 500 drops, somebody bought the stock at the new low price and they got a bargain. When it drops again, that only means the purchaser bid too high. They should have waited for a more desperate seller.

On the political side, without the 1929 Crash, it would have been 4 more years of Herbert Hoover and a GOP controlled Senate. But Inauguration Day (March 4, 1933) was the start of very, very temporary control by Democrats. By 1940, the GOP could stop anything in the Senate with a filibuster. It took Pearl Harbor to overcome the GOP resistance to fighting in WWII. Before that, the GOP was passively watching the Axis Powers burn down the whole world. By 1946, the GOP was once again the majority.

George Bush's grandfather, US senator Prescott Bush, was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from their involvement with the financial backers of Nazi Germany. Prescott certainly would not be voting against Hitler before Pearl Harbor. Money, you know, does that to you.

Good point, 6. We'd be in Mad Max territory. Unlikely, but possibl.

On the one hand, this was hilarious, since on Monday the 16th, the Dow had its second-worst day in history. Trump did not send out any signed charts about this.
On the other hand, this should terrify everyone. Even now, the president of the United States is lost in a fantasy world. Even worse, Trump’s fantasy is shared by many Americans. In this imaginary world, we can all get rich if the little flickering numbers on our iPhone’s Stocks app go up. It’s therefore also a disaster if the little numbers go down.
Up or down markets are a fantasy. What is real is what the corporation accomplishes, not its stock price. And lately many American corporations have nothing much to show for actual accomplishments.
In reality, America’s stock market wealth was always a mirage, one which we now see dissolving in front of us. It’s dangerous for us to hope it will reappear, because it’s a distraction from the real world that we have to focus on more than ever.

The key word is "always". Not just under the Trump administration.
This is something I've been saying since I first started posting to these boards in 2006.
The DOW is simply a vehicle to steal from the working class to give to the rich. Always was. Always will be.

Quote:The Founding Fathers were aware of the "working class", those who did not own a farm or a forest or a business. Those people were little better than slaves. But at least slaves were required by law to be fed by their owners. Very sensibly, the Founding Fathers did NOT allow slaves to vote and did not allow the "working class" to vote either. Nor women to vote.

Since the Founding, the right to vote, suffrage, has expanded, but if you don't own a farm or a forest or a business you are still no better than a slave in America. In other countries, it is different. Those countries give people rights that Americans who don't own stuff don't have. The right to health care, even if you have no money, for one example. In America, the government will let you die as all your teeth rot out. The American government doesn't care about your teeth because the "working class" has no more rights than slaves.
You would think the "working class" would use their undeserved right to vote to expand other rights for the "working class." But for peculiar reasons the "working class" won't. How many in the American "working class" voting Republican support Medicare for All? Not enough. Twenty-five percent said they "strongly" supported "Medicare for all". That is a small enough number that those can be ignored by the Senate.

So that you don't think universal health care coverage is the one and only thing that American slaves don't have a right to while citizens of other countries do have a right:

The European social democracies show just how much can be done. Denmark has reached a deal between unions and large employers to stop layoffs, with the government covering up to 75 percent of wages. Norway has promised to pay the self-employed 80 percent of their precrisis earnings for the duration of the pandemic.
