And they refuse to return it to the owner (Ukraine) or to the builder (Boeing), who normally decodes and translates/transcribes the data.

I wouldn't trust Boeing to decode anything or investigate anything, given how they buried all of the problems with the 737 Max.

If I were Iran, I wouldn't trust anyone affiliated with the USA either, given how the OPCW falsified it's own report.

I would probably hand it over to a group consisting of Ukraine, China, Russia, and Boeing. Yanno, let them guard each other.

France can handle the black boxes for Iran: France’s BEA safety investigators are searching for clues as to what caused an Ethiopian Airlines plane to hurtle to the ground after take-off, as they begin analyzing two black boxes that arrived in Paris on Thursday from the crashed Boeing 737 MAX.

The BEA has a listening room like a recording studio with audio mixing and playback equipment linked to a screen showing synchronized data, Reuters observed on a recent visit by a group of reporters. Four channels separate voices and ambient noise.

Only the main investigator and a handful of people hear most tapes, which are then sealed. In France, where judges routinely carry out parallel probes, a police officer may be present as well as representatives from foreign investigation agencies.

By all means, add France to the mix. That would break the potential "deadlock" situation that you get with even-numbered boards, commissions etc. and would still keep the decision-making body within reasonable numbers (typically 5 to 9. Less, and you can get a biased decision. More, and you tend to get factions.)

I vote for the greatest transparency posssible, which IMHO means investigators from politically-incompatible bodies.

Just remember the poor info-sharing on whether the USA drone shot down by Iran was, or wasn't, in Iranian airspace. I personally believe that those who launched and piloted the drone (USA operators) knew EXACTLY where the drone was at all times. (Unless of course someone fucked with the GPS and gyros and led the drone into wrong airspace.)

Now, this is a GREAT exercise in the kind of evidence that SHOULD be available about this incident. I will repeat the same list from MH-17:

black boxes
debris field
radar tracking (any missiles seen on radar?)
communication with tower
transponder communication
satellite data (if any)
electronic ground (military) communications
shrapnel or munitions holes in plane debris
shrapnel or munitions debris on the ground
trace metal signatures
micro-fractures in plane metal indicating fast (onboard high explosives) or slow bending
explosive chemical traces
CCTV footage, or social media recordings
eyewitness accounts

I'm sure I've forgotten some, but it should be clear that there should be a mountain of evidence available. It's far too early to reach conclusions and far too easy to get mesmerized by one or two items and not take conflicting evidence into account.

Let's not do that again, OK?

http://twitter.com/i/status/1215142169775726592 Not very revealing. All it shows it that the plane was burning very close to the ground (as you can see by the moving shadows) and that SOMETHING exploded ... possibly the plane crashing (the bright flash right before debris starts falling).

There are other pictures of the debris, one of the engine housing where there are questions about the holes (but the edges appear bent outwards and there are jagged edges indicating an internal explosion forcing the metal outwards) and a picture of the fuselage right past the cockpit which seems to have a half-dozen holes in it of approximately the same size.

Not sure if anyone knows about how these missiles are supposed to work, but they don't actually HIT the plane, they explode in a plane's path and create a cloud of shrapnel which takes the plane down. The shrapnel (as I learned) has a typical size, shape and composition, it's not just random pieces of metal stuffed into a shell.

Latest news...It was TWO accidental missiles...fired from Mars and ricocheted off Venus, where Hillary just happens to have a second vacation house. It's all her fault.
