Attorney General William Barr recently sent a memo to law enforcement officials announcing a new federal initiative that would use techniques and tools developed in the war on terror, such as mass surveillance, to identify potential mass shooters. Those so identified would be targets of early interventions, which would include the disregarding of Second Amendment rights, as well as the imposing of mandatory counseling and involuntary commitment.
The program would likely match data collected via mass surveillance with algorithms designed to identify those with mental problems that would lead them to commit violent crimes. So, this program would deprive Americans of respect for their rights not because they committed, or even threaten to commit, a violent act but because their tweets, texts, or Facebook posts trigger a government algorithm.
In order to enhance the government’s ability to conduct mass surveillance, Barr has been trying to force tech companies to allow the government to have a “backdoor” for accessing electronic information. This would allow the government to read all messages — even those that are encrypted, making it all but impossible to escape the government’s watchful eye. ...

How Surveillance and Propaganda Work in ‘the Free World’
A Bloomberg report of October 22 was concise and uncompromising in declaring Russia to be a surveillance state. Harking back to the good old days of the Cold War, as is increasingly the practice in much of the Western media, Bloomberg recounted that “... these days it’s not just foreigners who are being tracked, but all 12.6 million Muscovites, too. Officials in Moscow have spent the last few years methodically assembling one of the most comprehensive video-surveillance operations in the world. The public-private network of as many as 200,000 cameras records 1.5 billion hours of footage a year that can be accessed by 16,000 government employees, intelligence officers and law-enforcement personnel.”

The statistics obtained by Caught on Camera and comparitech differ markedly from those in the Bloomberg story which was retailed throughout the Western world by many news outlets, who increasingly refer to the West as “the Free World”. Comparitech records that as at August 2019 Moscow, with a population of 12.4 million, had 146,000 (not 200,000) cameras, while London’s 9 million citizens were being watched by 627,707 cameras. The picture (if one may use that word) is slightly slanted.
To put it another way, London has 68 cameras for each 1,000 people, and the ratios elsewhere are enlightening: Shanghai 113 (China is in treble figures in three cities); Atlanta (Ga) 15; Chicago 13; Baghdad, Sydney and Dubai 12; Moscow and Berlin 11; and St Petersburg, Canberra and Washington DC tie at 5.
The slanting doesn’t stop there, because there are other ways of attacking Russia, spearheaded by such as the Washington Post, which highlighted the Bloomberg surveillance tale. The Post behaves like Big Brother focusing on Winston Smith, the hapless victim/hero of 1984 whose job it is “to rewrite the reports in newspapers of the past to conform with the present reality.” There is an eerie resonance in this, because the Post’s reportage on Russia verges on the obsessively censorious, while it avoids mention of anything remotely positive.
Understandably, the Post relies heavily on such sources as “Meduza, a Latvia-based online news outlet that covers the Kremlin” which reported that the Russian government “passed a law earlier this year that lets Vladimir Putin take all the country’s Internet traffic off the World Wide Web if he decrees that there’s an ‘emergency’.”

I focus on surveillance and privacy because a lot of people think 'it won't happen to me'. But the technology (camera / computer / AI) is already here to surveil everybody, all at the same time. If you've ever seen "Person of Interest" then you've had a good look at what exists today.
The only questions are: which governments choose to use it, and which governments choose to tell you about what they're doing.
With its massive nation-spanning camera network and AI-driven facial recognition, along with message-capturing/analyzing technology, (among other things), China surveils out in the open. It then generates a social credit score based on things like monitored jaywalking or critical phone messages, with real-life economic consequences. This technology isn't aimed at a limited number of special individuals. It's being used on ALL Chinese; all roughly 1.4 billion.
I've posted before about the surveillance in China not because I'm so concerned about Chinese freedom, (I'm not), but because it illustrates the level of technology available to governments around the globe. And of course, if we know about this, I guarantee there's more more being used in the dark.
AT LEAST THAT'S NOT US! we think WE ARE TOLD. Unlike China, unlike Russia, we're free here in the western world!
That's a myth. I hope you understand that. What in fact is happening is that our governments are surveilling us in secret. They're simply not telling us what they do.

A few comments:
1) This opens the pathway for the NSA to "legally" intercept an American's communications simply by "ring fencing" that person's foreign-entity communications. Say that you want to capture Pelosi's communications but you can't do it legally. All you have to do is grab the names of all of the foreign entities that she's in communcation with, and monitor THEM, with the intent of snatching up HER communications.

The full article, which I will reprint, points to the NSA-database that I have referred to from time to time. It is chock-a-block full of (what was formerly) ILLEGALLY-OBTAINED communications. This database is SECRETLY SHARED WITH LAW ENFORCMENT AGENCIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, not just the FIB but also the DEA, ATF, various other "Homeland Security" agencies, the Treasury, IRS, and local police and sheriffs.
Until now, these various enforcement agencies have had to content themselves with needing to construct a LEGALLY OBTAINED chain of evidence, in essence fabricating a series of warrants and "flips" which would account for the evidence that they obtained illegally.
I'm going to extend this to Trump, the DNC, the so-called "Russian hack", and Assange.
If anyone thinks that all electronic communications across our border, and espeically destined for Julian Assange, conveniently (for the deep state) held in a fixed place in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, was not being (illegally) monitored to the fullest extent technically possible by the NSA .... they're nuts. If anyone thinks that the TRUMP campaign's foreign (and domestic) comunications were not being (illegally) monitored to the fullest extent possible by the NSA, they're nuts. That the Mueller investigation was not able to even concoct any evidence linking Trump to the Russians but had to rely on some cocked-up "dossier" speaks volumes of the LACK OF EVIDENCE against Trump, whether obtained legally or not.
Just, yanno, FYI.
3) The ruling was from the 2nd District Appeals Court (NYC), which btw does not cover DC. I'm sure that this will go to the Supreme Court, and I hope they insist on a plain reading of the 4th Ammendment. I know that this might prevent catching Joe Biden diddling the Ukrainian government, or it might allow Hillary to continue to hide her "pay for play" operations based in the State Department but we need to uphold the Constitution here, and not give more power to Big Brother.
