Why, because what Trump did is specifically mentioned in the constitution as being against the law. And if the evidence of Trumps guilt is overwhelming, then by virtue of their vote the Senate would be changing the constitution. For that you need a two thirds majority.
This would also apply to violations of the emolument's clause. Haven't thought about this long enough to see if it applies elsewhere but it may be the way forward.

I am certain that the Supreme Court will not take the case to decide if Trump is guilty despite the Senate voting NOT GUILTY. The Supreme Court would stall and waste a lot of time hemming and hawing until after the Nov 3, 2020 election.
What gets interesting is if Trump should lose the election. There is only a 50% chance he will lose. Then something unpredictable might happen. He might immediately give himself a pardon to avoid prosecution for tax evasion, then Trump resigns, then Trump hopes that President Mike Pence also gives him another pardon, just to be extra sure. Trump would probably fly Air Force One to Russia, where he resigns, than asks for political asylum.
If Trump wins, again a 50% chance, The Greatest Show on Earth will continue four more years. The Alternative? The 41 or more GOP Senators spend four years sabotaging a Democratic President. And they will do it, too. That won't be The Greatest Show. It will be awful.

Interesting post. OK think back and try and remember all the different legal issues regarding Trumps behavior since announcing his candidacy. I know, it's impossible. These attempts by Trump to skirt the law using the court system are all maturing, and he's losing.
It's possible without much maneuvering by the democrats, Trumps criminal behaviors will consume the airwaves for the unforeseeable future. My hope is that the American people will say enough. If they do what you've posted will not come to fruition. Something else entirely will.

(Rand) Paul said in an interview Tuesday that the whistleblower “is a material witness to the possible corruption of Hunter Biden and Joe Biden.” He said Congress should investigate the whistleblower’s ties to the Biden family and Burisma Holdings, the Cyprus-registered gas company that paid Hunter Biden $50,000 per month when he was on its board of directors.
“[The whistleblower] might have traveled with Joe Biden to Ukraine for all we know. We should look at his writings. We should know all of this stuff to see whether or not he has any intersection with Burisma and with Hunter Biden,” said Paul.
