All I've ever asked is... what are these things ?
If the best you have is " they sorta kinda resemble missiles ", but we know they aren't , where's that leave us ?

Welp, because when folks whose JOB is to identify potential threats, and do nothing but run drills and stay at their ready to deal with ANYTHING face an " unknown " like this, it matters to them. They are expected to determine what, if any potential threat these objects are, and yet... they can't.
My mammalian hominid brain can only offer a few explanations...
1. Natural phenomena. What , how , why ? Dunno. Just new things we've not seen, and have yet to explain.
2. hoax. never mind what the navy said, or anyone claims, it's all one big con game. Reasons, unknown. Just isn't real. Sorry.
3. Not a hoax. Something though. One of ours, which we're not letting the military in on, because that's how black ops roll. ( and yes, Stargate is real )
4. Not a hoax. Not ours, at all. Belongs to some foreign country, or organization - Spectre like. Either super tricky hoax gear they've got , to fool us, or they really do have modern physics defying tech.
5. Not ours, or anyone. Here on Earth, that is. Yes. Actual aliens. There. I said it.
6. Inter dimensional whoozits. Living ? A.I. ? Both ? Neither. Beyond my ability to grasp. Hell, they may barely even know we're here.
7. Us, but far in the future ( or past ? ) Timey wimey stuff. Reasons unknown, until and unless they tell us, one way or another.
