For the record, the Mueller probe produced 199 charges against 37 people and entities. Seven people pleaded guilty. Five people were sentenced to prison. So, this investigation was not quite a "hoax." And away we go!

Not true! Yes, Mueller has ended his investigation. And, yes, according to the attorney general's summary of the Mueller report, there was no collusion established. But Mueller specifically wrote that while his investigation did not conclude the President committed a crime, that decision "does not exonerate" Trump on the matter.

3. "Total exoneration. Complete vindication."

Trump’s attorney general called Trump a liar: "Does not exonerate."

4. "The crazy attempt by the Democrat Party and the fake news media right back there and the 'deep state' to overturn the results of the 2016 election have failed."

To be clear: The special counsel investigation was launched by a Trump appointee -- Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein -- and run by a lifelong Republican (Mueller). It is not clear how that amounts to a "deep state" conspiracy aimed at overturning the results of the 2016 election.

Not to beat a dead horse here but ... seven people affiliated in a variety of ways with Trump and/or his campaign pleaded guilty to crimes ranging from financial fraud to lying to investigators about the breadth and depth of conversations with Russians. I am not sure how "those who lost the election" were able to make that happen. But remember that Trump and his base thrive on a) victimhood and b) conspiracy theories. And so, Trump leans heavily into both.

7. "And this group of major losers did not just ruthlessly attack me, my family and everyone who questioned their lies they tried to divide our country."

Victimhood + conspiracy, with a pinch of bullying ("major losers") thrown in for flavor.

Of course Trump and his campaign colluded. But charging a sitting president of treason is next to impossible. That's why you trun over your findings to congress. Schiff tells us some of how they colluded.

Trump Aided and Abetted Russia’s Attack. That Was Treachery. Full Stop.

As the official GOP nominee, Trump received a classified intelligence briefing that included the intelligence community’s assessment that Moscow was the perpetrator in the email-hack-and-wikileak-dump operation. Despite knowing, Trump repeatedly downplayed or denied Russian involvement. He did this in public statements and at the debates.

This stance turned Putin’s attack into a political dispute. Top Republicans (and Trump-cheering pundits in the media) generally followed his lead and declined to rally against the Russian assault. This prevented the coalescing of a focused national response to Putin’s war on the election. (Mitch McConnell torpedoed the Obama administration’s request for a bipartisan pre-election statement calling out the Russians, for one example. www.kentucky.com/opinion/editorials/article120718538.html )

Despite the attack and the official Obama announcement, Trump stuck to his false line: the Russians should not be held accountable. An overseas foe was striving mightily to undermine a US election, and Trump had been told this privately by US intelligence, and the US government had issued a public declaration. Yet Trump echoed and amplified Moscow’s denials. He was siding with the enemy.

A candidate seeking the job of defending the United States was facilitating an attack on the nation. And after winning the White House, Trump would keep on protecting Putin by dismissing Russian involvement and the significance of the attack.

Trump has diverted attention from the fact that he facilitated an assault on his own country. That may or may not have been illegal per Mueller’s report. But it was betrayal. It was treachery.

The bottom line was established before Mueller submitted his report: Trump committed the most significant political misdeed in American history. The public did not need the Mueller report to confirm this. The foundation of this scandal has for long resided within plain sight.

Belligerence, shamelessness and partisanship are Trump's strategy

If Mueller’s inquiry had ended with a bombshell revelation like the one in Watergate — where Nixon essentially confessed to obstruction of justice on tape, asking the director and the deputy director of the C.I.A. to pressure the F.B.I. into ending its investigation of the break-in — Trump's strategy might have collapsed against the force of the facts. Instead, the report, at least as summarized by Attorney General William Barr, disappeared.

Trump choose an extremely partisan attorney general: Barr recommended pardons for key actors in Iran-contra as attorney general for George H.W. Bush in 1991 and had already ruled out charging Trump with obstruction in an unsolicited June 2018 memo.

Instead of ending in drama like Watergate, the Russia scandal is likely to fade away like Iran-contra. There is still a report to read — reportedly more than 300 pages long — but President Trump has already declared victory, a testament to how belligerence, shamelessness and partisanship can undermine any attempt to hold a president or his allies accountable for wrongdoing.

To suggest that military conflict between two nuclear powers inches ever closer can no longer be dismissed as hyperbole.

All this was set in motion when the DNC’s mail server was first violated in the spring of 2016 and by subsequent assertions that Russians were behind that “hack” and another such operation, also described as a Russian hack, on July 5. These are the foundation stones of the edifice just outlined. The evolution of public discourse in the year since is worthy of scholarly study: Possibilities became allegations, and these became probabilities. Then the probabilities turned into certainties, and these evolved into what are now taken to be established truths. By my reckoning, it required a few days to a few weeks to advance from each of these stages to the next. This was accomplished via the indefensibly corrupt manipulations of language repeated incessantly in our leading media.
