Our poor puppy-wuppy. I was weeding out in the front yard and, as usual, had puppy-wuppy on a rope so she could stay outside instead of being bored in the house. I check on her from time to time as she gets her rope tangled around things, so I untangled her rope, went back to weeding, and the next time I checked on her about 10 minutes later she was collapsed in the ground, unable to move. So I scooped her up and raced off to the vets, where she slowly recovered without treatment. They took a blood test before letting her home; I got the results this AM and two of her liver enzymes are completely out of whack, indicating some sort of liver insult.
Vet immediately asked me about sago palm when he read the results to me ... apparently notorious for causing liver failure in dogs, but altho they're all over the neighborhood we don't have any on our street, much less in our yard. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what she might have gotten into, but none of the dog-toxic plants that I found are (1) in our yard or (2) cause liver damage. Vet gave her some liver-support meds. I'm so worried about puppy-wuppy; but all I can do is wring my hands and hope that she comes thru OK.

My brother's family is going through the end days of one of their dogs now. It's way too early for it. She was a rescue and was damn near starved to death when they got her, but they made her a good strong dog. I think she's only like 6 or 7 years old. Freakin' cancer... They're about $1,500 into treatments so far and the situation isn't improving. They can't do chemo since that results in a lot of toxicity around the house and there's two other dogs and my niece.

I had a great Aunt that lived in Montana and every winter would head down to Arizona to get away from the cold there.

Puppy wuppy is at about 85% of normal energy, so as long as she stays at that level/ gets better I feel reassured. The liver has remarkable regeneration capacity.

On a happier note, we have a migration of painted lady butterflies through our region thanks t a "superbloom" of flowers in the deserts, spurred on by better-than-average rainfall. In my fair city, it's not a blizzard (yet) as we have seen in the past (altho that too may come) but I see at least three painted ladies everywhere I look. The cosmos, groundcover sage and california poppies are all blooming now, so the ladies are taking an occasional drink on their way thru.

Poor puppy! Poor you! I have my fingers crossed she makes a steady improvement and ends up good as new.
I too have painted lady butterflies where I am, but here they're like a river. There's a heavy flow of butterflies everywhere I've been today. It's so cool to see! It's great!

Well... for sure my car problem is not the transmission. Now that it's warmed up after I adjusted that cable, the problem is just a tiny fraction of what it used to be.
It's harder than I would have thought to find the part. I'm going to have to shop around because the place I usually go only has one option for one of the two cables I need and it's over $50 bucks. I'm sure I can get this stuff cheaper than that.
Warm weather is coming. :)
I think all I'll need is these new cables, a transmission fluid flush and filter replacement and I should get another 100k miles on that car. Probably last me another 10 years.

Yanno, when I was a child AHEM! years ago, I do recall snow for Easter. Our mom would always dress us up in our Easter best, but sometimes it was pretty damn cold and a winter coat would have to go on top! And it was always fun, slipping and sliding on the ice in our shiny patent-leather shoes with the slick soles!
I think it really was colder back then. This year seems to be a reversion to yesteryear; I wonder if it will be warmer next year or if this is part of a multi-year warm Alaska/cold midwest-east pattern.

This is the painted lady butterfly, migrating by the billion through So Cal.
It's always nice to see a butterfly. But when you see a river of them flitting through your neighborhood, hour after hour, it's thrilling!

The two week forecast does look a lot warmer than it did when I looked about a week ago. A few cold days and freezing nights still when I'm off work, but most of them are in the low 50's now for the high.
