lol. Too true.
But my point is make it known over the next 25 years that benefits would be half. Make it part of sex education. Drill it into their heads when they're kids that the free ride is coming to an end. Then drill it into their kids that there will be no help for them if they have kids.
I believe rewarding people for having kids has to end, but you can't just switch that off overnight or you'd have riots on the streets, literally.
This isn't just for people close to poverty, either...
In the same timeframe, completely cut any tax benefits that married middle class and rich people get for their kids. (No dependents, only a single standard deduction per worker).
Also, lower homeowner's property taxes who don't have kids, while raising property taxes for people who do have kids and are the ones benefiting from the school system.

Well... once again, I think this is a problem that is a problem because nobody ever talks about it. The people that run the show, at least until recently, seemed to want more and more people every year, fueling the commerce. How many suckers are born every minute?
According to google, 250 of them. (360,000 people born every day).
Ask yourself why aren't any of the Democrat politicians once ever talking about population being a problem when they talk about saving the environment? It's obvious why the Republican politicians don't since they just flat out deny there is an environment problem.
It seems like everyone on this board is smart enough to realize that overpopulation is a problem, no matter what their political leanings are.

Well... yeah. I'm pretty sure you're never going to have an actual perpetual motion machine. You'd seriously blow my mind if you were able to manage that. (Not to mention that somebody from Big Oil and/or Commonwealth Edison would probably suicide you before it ever saw the light of day)
I was thinking more along the lines of a near frictionless device that could amplify the power that we could already harness with the sun. Once you got that, we could hook some batteries up to it and have it run all the time even when the sun's not out.

BTW, immigrants have a lot more children than natives. It's a common fact in every developed nation, including in the EU: Advance nations (like Japan, the nations in the EU, and the USA) are birthing at less than replacement rate. Without immigration, populations in these nations would fall, which is a good thing. Right?
The difference has to do with lifestyle and education. I haven't followed up on this, but I've heard of two trains of thought about this "demographic transition"
1) The cause is urbanization: Children no longer represent help on the farm and security in old age, but a ginormous economic drain on the parents; they are essentially a resource-suck (must be fed, housed, and schooled with no ROI) until they fly the coop, which is getting later and later these days or .... This demographic transition, in some studies, occurs reliably within three generations of urbanization. One of my child-minders herself had six children, HER mom (in Mexico) had 13. My grandmother - who grew up on a farm - had eight children (four were birth-children, four were step-children); only five grew to adulthood. THOSE children (my parent's generation) had one, two, or three children; and THOSE children (my generation) mostly had no children, or one or (in one case) two.
2) Educating women. In some studies, even rural women have fewer children once they get some sort of education.
In any case, the problem in the developed nations has nothing to do with birth numbers, and everything to do with lifestyle. The USA is an egregious example: We represent less than 5% of the world's population, but something like 25% of the world's CO2 emissions. And the other 25% of the world's CO2 emissions from China? A lot of that is emitted making doodads and junk for the USA market. We have an EXTREMELY wasteful lifestyle; our outsized energy costs center on the military and transportation, but EVERY sector is an outsized problem. But this doesn't mean that EVERYONE in the USA needs a reduction is lifestyle! Hell, a lot of people in LA are living under bridges and sidewalks! The problem is SYSTEMIC as well as individual.
In any case, no matter what triggers fewer children, women must have access to birth control. In some nations, women don't even have access to sanitary supplies, much less birth control. It's not a problem of being "stupid" it's a problem of being uneducated and/or with few other options besides baby-making.

Industrialized agriculture. Acres and acres plowed flat to allow highly mechanized operations, drenched multiple times a year with weedkillers, pesticides, plant hormones etc ... and not a ditch, windbreak, or hedgerow to provide shelter. Weedkiller sprayed with abandon on road margins and highway medians. Meanwhile those most heavily-exposed to Roundup (glyphosate, the companion to glyphosate-resistant GMO crops used to chemically-weed fields) have a 41% increase in non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Truly, we are digging our demise with convenience and "efficiency".
Look at all those lawns in the cities. How about we start urban farming? Yanno, get the kids to start hand-weeding that vegetable patch and become familiar with actual work?

Nothing I disagree with there, Sig. Even if the world population stopped increasing today, the rest uv the world iz rapidly catching up to our American standard uv living. Even if everybody stopped wasting so much food and doing so much damaj, thered still be too many uv us.
Most likely, there will be 1 or more dizasterz that wipe out the majority uv us. And that woud be the lucky future!
With todayz population density and rapid global mobility, a flu pandemic coud make the WW1 'Spanish' flu seem like just a preview.
