Would you be thinking that if the government gave you free shares every year of an Index fund that invested in the S&P 500 or the Dow-Jones? The GOP would never allow it, but the Democrats have a history of giving away money to the poor. For example there is the Democrats and Social Security and the Democrats and the War on Poverty and the Democrats and Medicare. The GOP do their best to stop all Democratic programs and the GOP has been partially successful, mostly because only a minority of Americans are poor and the majority of Americans don't want to pay to help the poor. The majority votes for the GOP.

The War on Poverty: What Went Wrong?
By Ron Haskins Tuesday, November 19, 2013

President Johnson’s soaring rhetoric (“For the first time in our history, it is possible to conquer poverty”) is still inspiring, but his prediction that the nation could “conquer poverty” turned out to be false. It is true that poverty declined by 30 percent within five years of Johnson’s declaration of war in 1964, but there has been little progress since the 1960s. For the last two decades, poverty has averaged well above the 12.1 percent achieved when Johnson left office in 1969. For the last three years, the poverty rate has been at or above 15 percent.

What factors explain the difficulty we have faced in reducing the poverty rate? Some analysts think we could reduce poverty by spending more money on the poor. Of course, we could simply give money to the poor until they reach the poverty line, a strategy Johnson employed with the elderly. By increasing Social Security benefits, Johnson reduced elderly poverty to 25 percent in 1968 from 35.2 percent in 1959, a reduction of nearly 30 percent. Poverty among the elderly has continued to fall. In 2012, a year in which the overall poverty rate was 15 percent and the child poverty rate was nearly 22 percent, the poverty rate among the elderly was 9.1 percent. So giving money to the poor can reduce poverty rates.

Not sure if you were paying attention. That was the entire point of my post that the day after Election is normally a gain. It is pattern recognition.
Upcoming are days such as the day before Christmas, the day after Christmas, the last day of the year, the first trading day of the New Year. How did those days perform in past years? Did one of those days always go up? Always go down? Did that day go up on years of Bull Market? On years of Lame Duck sessions? On years when that day fell on a Monday rather than Friday?

If you see the pattern of what happens on target dates, then you will "know" what to expect that date.

Agreed.

I'll only add to this that it is not Capitalism at fault. It is Government (on both sides of the aisle) and Multi-National corporations in cahoots with each other and allowing us the illusory lie of Capitalism.

We live in a Predatory Capitalistic society.

Maybe there was nothing to be done about it and this was always the inevitable end to what was once a true Capitalist society?

Maybe, just like Communism, Capitalism looks good on paper but in practice they both end up with all of the wealth in the hands of a very small fraction while the rest of us fight for scraps.

Right - the only people who care about the DOW are the most powerful people on the planet. Good one.

Dow closed today at 24,947. That is 7.0% off the Record All-Time High.

It hasn't closed that low since, like, 6 trading days ago. The sky must be falling. Maybe there is still time to buy at discount pricing.

So you decided to not accept any Matching Contributions to a 401k?
Of do you think your, and every other American in a 401k, were holding currency in bitcoin?

I'm doing enough to get the matching contributions. It's basically "fun money" to me, so I'm gambling with it. There aren't many Americans on pace to making $15,000 in 2018 that are putting anything in there.

One would assume this is why a large company like the one I work for that doesn't otherwise really give two shits about its employees does something as "generous" as this. It's good PR to say that they offer it, but they know that most people won't opt in.

No. I don't think it's Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a fallacy of 1's and 0's, not too unlike the USD is these days.

401k isn't only backed by labor. It siphons off the backs of workers and makes the rich richer.
