When my niece's were very young, I got them train sets with interlocking track, so they would learn geometry like I did. Their dolls all rode around the track.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I keep trying to persuade my own mom to start working out again to increase her mobility. It's a lot better with her MS down in Arizona because of the climate than it was up here, but that's all the more reason for her to try to improve things now. My step-dad is quite a bit older and won't be around forever. I have no idea what's going to happen in the future there myself. I already told my brother not to expect me to take her in because I'm not going to end up being a living caricature of Principal Skinner.
I haven't really ever bought my niece much of anything. She's got a billion toys. I'm the only person I'm aware of that she gets excited to see just because she wants to play instead of asking first thing "what did you get me?". Now that she's getting old enough to appreciate stuff and she can start playing with interesting things that we both can enjoy I'm going to be looking into getting more stuff that we can do when she comes over. I'll definitely be looking into toys that teach like my grandpa did when I was her age.
The seafoam seems to have worked wonders with my engine and oil pan. I haven't had any missfires for a long time now, and I haven't had any problems starting the car or keeping it running once it's started. On the other hand though, the transmission is not looking good. I keep hoping we'll get a bought of warm weather for me to drain it and put new fluid in, but it's been too cold for me to do that and it's not likely to warm up until spring. I'm just hoping that it survives the winter and even if I have to learn how to replace the transmission at that point I've heard I can get a rebuilt one for around $250. Finger's crossed.

Looks like that rainstorm is heading this way anyway, as predicted. Not huge ... somewhere between 0.25" to 0.75" ... but enough, I hope, to put out the fires which are still burning.
Gosh, it's hard to imagine the devastation of the Camp Fire which wiped out most of the city of Paradise. 1300 missing last I heard, many of them elderly. And down here in So Cal ... dear daughter and I used to go cabin=camping in the Santa Monica mountains with the Epilepsy Foundation, when they sponsored that kind of event. Beautiful area full of oak. I heard its mostly charred now.

But at least the rain will help all my newly-planted plants! The front yard was looking like a sandpit over the summer; I'm sure the neighbors were none-too-happy but it makes no sense to put $200 worth of plants in when you know they're going to die in two weeks. I'm so looking forward to these plants growing up and looking fabulous!

"Have bought a heating pad but I haven't had the nerve to break it out and use it yet." Oh ... dear ... it may not be as useful as you hope. The newer heating pads, here anyway, have built-in timers somewhere in the switch. They only stay on for an hour or so. I guess too many people were falling asleep with them and ending up with low-temperature burns which are just as nasty as regular ones - they just take longer to get.

Oh happy rain day!!
Some time between when I went to bed around 11:30 when it was just beginning to sprinkle, and 4:30 when I woke up at stupid-o'clock, it must have poured like a sunuvab!tch because my informal rain gage has well more than (the maybe, predicted) 0.25" in it. So I'm thankful for the approx 1" of rain that we got instead of the (maybe) 0.25" that they were predicting.
rain + subsequent sun = weeds but I have my trusty daughter to help.
The land is smiling and once again we have been blessed.

Learning about the tiles in mah jong is easy but learning how to count the points is hard. I've been playing with the tiles for over 3years and I still get mixed up in the point counting sometimes. I didn't know it was also called Tai Pei. I only knew the tiles represented numbers kind of in passing, since you don't need to know the actual number values in any version of the game I've ever played. The circles and bamboo were self explanatory, but I just assumed the characters had to be numbers written out as well. The flowers were kind of tricky for me to pick up without any context or instructions.
It's a fun game. I've never known anybody who knows how to play Mah Jong.

Yes, I have.
The flowers can be though with the tiles the flowers are easier to follow.
It is a fun game. As I said I have been hooked on it for years.

Do you have any other suggestions? Preferably anything $20 and under. I'd kind of like to build up a good collection of "smart" toys for her when she comes over. She's still at that age where her imagination can make anything a toy, but she'll probably be growing out of that soon.
