I don't think that's it. I see plenty of educated people who buy into this type of stuff from either side all the time.
I think it speaks far more to the power of tribalism mentality that is still very much a part of our DNA even though most of us would not want to admit or even believe how much we have in common with our pre-electricity-age ancestors.
I think that an unexpected side effect of what we've turned the internet into has become an extremely anti-societal means of regressing back to our cave man roots of tribalistic mentality.
I'm beginning to see that for the most part, at least among people of our own relative level of power and influence, there is no bad intent. Even when the insults and vitriol are coming out in full force. Everybody deep down wants to believe that they're the good guy. People in general are also very easily manipulated.
I think these reasons are much closer to the truth when trying to explain why most people will believe any headline they read that come from news sources that tend to say what they want to hear, and why they don't do any additional research of their own on the subject and oftentimes don't even read the entire articles.

Because most of them are undocumented immigrants themselves, they have been scared off by these new requirements. And with good cause: So far, dozens of applicants who took the chance of applying to be sponsors have been arrested on immigration charges.
As would-be sponsors shrink away, more of unaccompanied children are left stranded in federal custody.

The EU is most likely going to fade away because of this very problem. Thank you Hungary for standing up for yourselves, and thanks to other Eastern Bloc countries for backing them up.
The EU is going to be a lonely place in a couple of years with only a few countries remaining, if it isn't entirely dissolved.

What you claim there is nothing wrong with was described as racist by Trump in the 90's. What you fail to understand is that Trump adopted Pat Buchanans' racist protectionist platform hook line and sinker after he denounced it as stupid, racist and much more.

Do you know how to immediately prove who belongs to who? We're not just talking about a handful of kids here. Imagine giving away children to anybody who claimed that they were the parents only to find out down the road that you just gave thousands or more of them to predators or sex traffickers.
I don't think this is going to be an overnight process, and if you would throw aside your partisanship and actually think about the well being of the children you should be able to see how this is not a simply black and white issue at this point.
