Okay, so I'm prepping to teach my Juniors John Steinbeck's Cannery Row and last night I re-read the first chapter and was very impressed by just the first paragraph. So here's my idea: I'm going to repost the first paragraph of the book here and you must use that as the beginning of your Firefly-related story.
Here's the paragraph:
"Lee Chong's grocery, while not a model of neatness, was a miracle of supply. It was small and crowded but within its single room a man could find everything he needed or wanted to live and to be happy--clothes, food, both fresh and canned, liquor, tobacco, fishing equipment, machinery, boats, cordage, caps, pork chops. You could buy at Lee Chong's a pair of slippers, a silk kimono, a quarter pint of whiskey and a cigar. You could work out combinations to fit almost any mood. The one commodity Lee Chong did not keep could be had across the lot at Dora's."
What happens next is up to you!

I want to do this so badly, but the grad school portfolio must come first...ARRRRGGHH!!! I'll give it a shot as soon as I can after Turkey day weekend, when I'm planning on having it all done, come hell or high water!
I love this paragraph, and oh, yes, I've got a story brewing in my head...
"We gotta go to that crappy town where I'M a hero..."

That's okay, I've got to get through Turkey Day Weekend before I can really take a crack at this anyway. Take your time...then post them in the BSR.

...
Dora's boarding house had one particular inhabitant, a talented if notably intemperate practitioner of the physical arts. The redheaded jezebel in question was named Maleficence by her Calvinist minister father, a man who knew a thing or two about evil incarnate. Her devoted clientele, on the other hand, referred to her by various honorifics -- some not appropriate for polite company -- like 'Lishus, Luscious or Mal-licious.
For two bits, a gentleman caller could procure a social engagement with any of Dora's female roomers. Due to her notably fractious nature, that same gentleman caller could have his way with Maleficence for the somewhat steep price of only one bit. Or one thin dime and a three penny house credit, if he foreswore pressing legal action.

Cool...but isn't a "bit" technically 12.5 cents? Okay, I'm just too nitpicky for a Tuesday afternoon. I'm headin' home to pack for Turkey Day. Keep up the work, y'all!
