Jane Espensen is a veteran Mutant Enemy script writer who was responsible for the Firefly episode "Shindig." She has also written for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Deep Space Nine, Ellen, Gilmore Girls, and Star Trek. She lives in Los Angeles. That's what this makes me think of; one of those pop-culture philosophy textbooks (I have a couple of the Matrix ones). Interesting reading, but likely not a must-buy for non-rabid fans.

Probably be useful for those of us still burdened with academia though --it gives us a venue to reference Firefly in essays without sounding like too much of a geek.

Tangentially related story:

I worked for Writer's Digest Books once upon a time, as editor of a short-lived series of genre writing books. One of them was the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer's Sourcebook, and as "research" I attended DragonCon, where several wonderful things happened:

A) I was on a panel with John Saul and Terry Brooks, which led to several projects with Terry (incredibly nice person)

B) I was in a buffett line behind Harlan Ellison and spent the entire time trying to think of something to say. Ended up saying nothing, but worked with him later in my career anyway. (not an incredibly nice person)

C) Attended a Tor Books room party, where I met several of my favorite writers, including:

D) David Gerrold, who introduced himself to me by picking lint of the back of my jacket.

David is another incredibly nice person. We had a good chat, wherein I mentioned that "Trouble with Tribbles" was my favorite episode of Trek. He was trying to bring one of his novels to TV as a series, and at the time it was looking good, but ultimately nothing happened.

That brief conversation led to him writing a book for WDB called Worlds of Wonder: How To Write Science Fiction and Fantasy many years later. It was one of the last books I edited before leaving the company, and it remains possibly the best book on writing SF ever published -- by WDB or anyone else.

All of which is to say that I (A) miss the hell out of that job, which was the best job I ever had, and (B) will be buying this book for David's essay alone -- although Jewel's should be interesting, too.

I, too, will have an essay in that book, BTW, and it's naturally coming out 'round the same time as the release of the BDM and the BDNOTBDM (Big Damn Novelization of the Big Damn Movie ).
