. . . the press isn’t going to do the work of an actual opposition party, which is to formulate a political alternative that an adequate number of people find to be sufficiently inspiring to go out and vote for. That’s the job of the Democratic Party, an institution that’s had considerable trouble attracting press attention to its own message and ideas ever since Trump exploded on the scene. And keeping the media focused on a self-referential feud between Trump and the media is a way of maintaining his preferred approach of trying to suck up all the oxygen in the room.
Meanwhile, what matters to Trump isn’t any actual crushing of the media, but simply driving the narrative in his core followers’ heads that the media is at war with him. With that pretense in place, critical coverage and unflattering facts can be dismissed even as Trump selectively courts the press to inject his own preferred ideas into the mainstream.

That being said, people might stop accusing the MSM of having it out for Trump if the MSM would stop having it out for Trump. The only reason you don't see it is because you are the intended viewer for all of it. The one that wants a daily affirmation for your viewpoint.

Watching the video from Trump’s confusing DACA meeting with Congress, Trump doesn’t understand the details and that’s a major problem. It’s about the Dreamers, but that’s all he knows.
There are five different proposals to enshrine DACA into law. For weeks, Republicans have been asking the White House for more clarity on what Trump’s vision for a DACA deal. But clarity was hard to come by on Tuesday. I’ve been in meetings and Trump was obviously winging it from one minute to the next. Maybe he just woke from a nap where he dreamed he had studied and was prepared to talk about the subject?
Sen. Dick Durbin has been on the front lines of Congress’s immigration debate for more than a decade, but after he left a meeting with Trump on the issue Tuesday, he said his “head is spinning.”
The takeaway here is simple: Looking to Trump isn’t going to get Republicans any closer to a deal on DACA. That’s a negotiation that has to happen among themselves, without Trump’s uninformed input.

“Local voice matters.” But only as long as that voice is a Republican governor in an important swing state. West coast states with Democratic governors who didn’t vote for Donald Trump can pound sand. Ditto for Virginia, which opposes drilling off its coast. Ditto for northeastern states, all of which oppose drilling off their coasts. You guys didn’t vote for Trump, so tough luck.
To state the obvious, Trump gives friendly states explicitly favorable treatment and enemy states — this is how Trump seems to think of them — are punished. This attitude has already spread to Republicans in Congress, who crafted their tax bill with petty punishments of blue states as a top priority.
This is not — repeat not — something that Democrats have ever made a habit of. The stimulus bill treated every state fairly. Obamacare treated every state fairly. Even in judicial appointments, a favorite playground for partisan politics, every state was treated fairly. But now Republicans are doing their best to bring back the kind of frankly punitive spoils-system politics that we all thought had been long abandoned. We’re sure learning a lot these days about what “conservative” means in the 21st century.
