I've read that some welder's glass is the shiznit. #14 or darker. If you don't have a welder's mask, you can buy the glass at any welding supply store.
I've heard that some of the glasses being sold for this aren't up to snuff.
I saw the last one from here back in '79, through a telescope. It was amazing. Not total, but still really cool.
Again, won't be total here, but close.

Yeah... welder's mask is a good idea. I joked with my dad that it was the only way you'd get me to look at the sun. Sure as shit ain't going to look through some 5 dollar cardboard glasses off of Amazon.com.
I can't remember when the one I saw was. If I had to guess it was in '85.
How did you look through the telescope? Did you have a welder's mask on?
I was just thinking that the Government should just mail certified glasses to everyone. Probably would end up saving a ton of money in the long run on disability payments. I'm not joking.....

Not I, but doesn't shock me. I know of cruises, airplane rides, mountain top parties... I'm planning to be on a lake in N. Ga.
To be honest, I can't think of too many brides who'd want to be upstaged by the sun and moon at her wedding.

Apparently, there will be massive releases of weather balloons and monitoring equipment that will probably have lights on them, so they are warning Kentucky...probably to keep people from shooting "at the aliens".

"As customers prepare for next week’s total solar eclipse, Amazon has issued a recall for some of the eclipse glasses sold on its internet marketplace, saying it was unable to confirm whether the protective ware was made by a recommended manufacturer.
NASA and the American Astronomical Society have been urging solar gazers to use glasses engineered by reputable vendors that carry the international safety standard number “ISO 12312-2.”
Eclipse glasses made under these standards block 100,000 times more light than ordinary sunglasses. Even brief, unprotected glimpses of the sun can cause blurry vision or blindness. The American Astronomical Society has spotted counterfeit eclipse glasses on Amazon in the past."

As I have suggested (humorously) you're a complete idiot if you try and view this eclipse. Not tinfoil hat paranoia, just basic caveat emptor. Have you ever returned something because it didn't work the way you thought it would? Did you ever buy something that just wasn't like the sales pitch? Yeah, who hasn't. I love my eyes, I love seeing exactly like I see now - "no touching guns."
