I think you're over-generalizing people and not giving them enough credit Second. I didn't like Obama at all, and I thought he was a terrible president. I like a lot of the people that I know who voted for him though. Well... as much as I actually "like" people.

So no, I was not at all saying that I don't like voters. That would mean that I only like people that don't vote. I'm sure there are a lot of lousy people who don't pay attention to politics at all. I'm sure there are a lot of wonderful people too.

I think, unlike you, I'm able to admit that there are plenty of shitty people on both sides and just because I don't see eye to eye with somebody on political ideas doesn't mean I think they're a shitty person.

The problem is that the money and the power that comes with politics draws the shittiest people like moths to a flame.

Politicians are garbage people.

This is laughable, but here’s the thing: I know that his Texan supporters love this kind of attitude. After all, that’s how they treat information. (Not you, of course. I mean other people.) If it supports their opinion, they trumpet it. If it doesn’t, they dismiss it. That’s how "normal" people who want to win arguments deploy facts and figures, and Trump’s fans view him as a "normal" guy who wants to win, not some truth-seeking academic egghead. Which came first? Chicken or egg?

Bottom line: Donald Trump may be an asshole, but he’s their asshole.

I don't want to take things out of context, so I'd have to see the whole press conference... or at least the question that was asked of him before he said it.

That being said, on face value as it is presented with no context, that is a laughably stupid thing to say.

He wasn't right by saying those numbers "didn't matter" before either. Maybe he meant that they were bullshit numbers, which they were. They're not even close to describing the actual jobs situation.

If he is indeed all of the sudden saying that they are legitimate now that he's president that's bullshit.

Trump has done this same thing before today. It made no difference to his followers in the past. Today will make no difference to his followers in the future. His followers only believe what supports their opinions, which is why Trump only believes facts that support his opinions. Or is it the other way around? Chicken/Egg. Which came first? Trump's tone on the matter began to change shortly after he took office in January. In March, after a sizable gain in employment in February, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the president was pleased with the new numbers.

“I talked to the president prior to this, and he said to quote him very clearly: 'They may have been phony in the past, but it’s very real now,' " Spicer said.

Trump also took issue in the past with the unemployment rate, arguing that it was much higher than reported under former President Obama.

"The unemployment rate is probably 20 percent, but I will tell you, you have some great economists that will tell you it's at 30, 32,” he said in September 2015. “And the highest I've heard so far is 42 percent."

This isn't behavior exclusive to Republicans or supporters of Trump.

Barry was a terrible president who contradicted himself constantly over 8 years, yet in the eyes of many he could do no wrong. (I'm being diplomatic here and not outright saying he lied constantly).

Trump was right about the employment numbers during Obama, although he may have been exaggerating them a tad. I never heard that 42% number, but 20% is probably pretty accurate, especially if you include under-employment which in many cases is just as bad.

I take great issue with him staying that the numbers are correct now though, if that is what he is saying.

The 4% numbers are new to me though. My thoughts without seeing the entire press conference is that this was not a discussion about unemployment in America, but in one of the states that is doing better than average if they're throwing around numbers so low.

Would not surprise me if the MSM took footage of him talking about unemployment in a particular area or state and said he was talking about the numbers in the entire country.

The Business Insider said that the 4.2% - 4.3% numbers Trump uses are almost the same as the actual 4.4% from the June 2017 Bureau of Labor Statistic's report of unemployment for the entire country. That is not just for one state. It is the whole country, including where you are. Some states, and especially some counties, will do far worse than 4.4%. It all averages to 4.4%. www.bls.gov/cps/

And that's using the EXTREMELY generous BLS definition of "employed", which counts you as "employed" if you got paid for ONE HOUR that month. If anyone were to graph a population-wide "total number of hours worked" versus the total work-age population, I'd bet the numbers would look even crappier.

That my parents should get jobs at Walmart so that I could say they are employed and their lives would instantly be more meaningful because of the importance of work to their spiritual well-being? (And pushing labor participation rate higher than 60% on the statistics?)

My point would be that if you don’t have a job where you are living, move to where the jobs are. Don’t be ignorant and expect Trump to bring the jobs to you or other impractical people who are unemployed because they won’t understand that they will have to move or else live and die without money where they are.

I shouldn't have to tell you ... but apparently I do ... that in 1950, you could actually support a family on one wage. Because back in our days of greatness, the tax rate on the rich was 90%, and American industry was preeminent in a world destroyed by war.

The very best statistic for how "the middle class" is doing would be to multiply the total number of hours worked by the weighted average wage, add any "capital gains" that family might accrue, and then divide that by the total economy. Yanno, like this
