Wow! Thanks for posting and giving us all a little insight, not only into you, but publishing as a whole (page count guessing made me chuckle).
I look forward to the book to see how you will add to the movie experience.
I tell you, and everyone, a good example of a movie novelization is the MiB novel. I saw the movie, then read the book, and then watched the movie again, and saw it differently, but in a good way.
The novel shows you that "Edgar", despite being a man-eating killer cockroach from outer space, actually was a multi-dimensional character you can *almost* understand why he is doing what he does and at times you forget he is the "bad guy".
Thanks again KRAD, I can't wait to get my ruttin' mitts on your gorram Serenity novel!

KRAD, thanks so much for answering that question for me! 
My personal opinion on why those novels didn't sell so well is that you're the only one who bothered to do any research (of course, it sounds like that was fairly easy for you, since you seem to be a fan of well-written genre 
). The other two were Farscape in name only; yours read like an episode.
I can't wait for April, 2005: Serenity the novel, Serenity the BDM, and my birthday, so guess what two things I'm asking for for my b-day?

Amazon listed a ship date of Jan 11. For the record, if by some miracle that happens, I am NOT reading it till the movie. Okay, maybe the first page...or the second...or the third...

KRAD,
Since you seem to be dishing the info , I was wondering who gets the final word on your additions. Do you discuss them with Joss, does he read your final draft before it's released, or is it left up to your judgement? Obviously the consensus around here is that your judgement is excellent, so I'm not worried either way, but I was curious, especially since they've left the possilities of follow-on movies open.

Thanks for answering all the questions so far, I preordered the book yesterday hopefully I'll be able to wait until after seeing the film to read it but it'll be pretty cool to sneak a peak at the first few pages.
I was wondering if sales affect your position in anyway. For example if the sales are nice and healthy are you more likely to get to write potential sequels (wishful thinking I know) and also if the book sold much better than expected would there be a posibillity of you getting to write more books maybe covering the six months or so that have passed since the series.

Trask, I can't answer your question with any definitiveness because I'm not involved in the licensing. That's Pocket's department. I'm just the guy they hired to write the novelization. 
FFFan1, the only person I deal with directly is my editor at Pocket. She then deals with Universal, and Universal deals with Joss. Lotsa bureaucracy! I did write up a memo with some questions and comments, which Joss responded to, but I sent the memo to my editor, who sent it to the licensing person at Universal, who sent it to Joss, who sent it back to the licensing person, who sent it to my editor, who sent it to me in the house that Jack built. 
Welcome to the wonderful world of licensed fiction.
Anyhow, all stages of the manuscript have to be approved by the licensor, and I can't imagine that it won't be approved until Joss puts his stamp on it.
