Not too surprising that a lot of pretentious films made the cut. They pretty much cater to critics.

I finally took a look at the list of 50 today, here's my take: First, we must consider the source, as Zeek commented, they cater to critics. I get what he means, but there were some excellent choices that I was a little surprised about. Still though, great movies are great movies. As I always
say, it's the story, above all else, it's the story.
Star Wars - surprised, but it was a game changer in the film world.
Raging Bull - great story and well told by Scorcese.
Diving Bell & The Butterfly - I really liked this film.
Days of Heaven - great story and Malick was masterful. The cinematography and narration stand out above all.
Spotlight - great contemporary story, superb acting & deft direction.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - not only the best foreign film, but the best film of 2000; and again, great story.
Pulp Fiction - By far Tarantino's best work, deftly crafted in every aspect of filmmaking and storytelling.
Pan's Labyrinth - one of my favorites and a true masterpiece by Guillermo Del Toro; because of the story and how he told it.
The above are extremely good arguments for the Best 50 list, but, and I say this regarding the audience this article serves, these are the cream of the crop and would be considered by the average moviegoer as fine by anyone's standards.
Schindler's List - Should have included this film among the top in the 50 Greatest. It is an instant classic IMHO.

These lists are fun to look at - and frustrating if you take them at all seriously. Wall-E as the 25th Best movie of all time??? Speechless. The Republic is doomed.
What I like about these lists is they make me aware of films that I haven't seen that "others" have high regard for. This is incredible, but I have not seen The Manchurian Candidate yet.

I agree, Wall-E was a good movie, by any measure, but best of all time?
Star Wars? I agree because it was ahead of it's time and, as I mentioned before, a groundbreaking film that changed the course of modern filmmaking even outside of the sci-fi realm. ILM became an industry standard for crying out loud! But let us not forget the story, it is an iconic one.
Below are the films I would consider on the second tier of greatness and could only be judged with the passing of time. A true "Best of" must withstand this test (in no particular order).
Ran - every serious filmmaker gives this film tremendous amounts of respect,
I have yet to see it, but they can't all be delusional.
The Social Network - All hail David Fincher for his brilliant direction, he took Aaron Sorkin's screenplay and made it relatable to the average moviegoer and not just the nerds who worship Zuckerberg. Jesse Eisenberg was a revelation as the lead actor.
Spirited Away - I have yet to see this movie, but all sing it's praises.
Dr. Strangelove - Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey should be here but I'm going by their list. This movie is a bit dated, but it has withstood the test of time because Sellers is pure movie magic in this flick. Some of the best dry humor in film, ever.
Inside Out - I did see this movie and I'm on the fence about it for greatest of all time, but it makes a damn good argument.
45 Years - heard wonderful things about this movie
Before Midnight - I haven't seen any of these movies (Before Sunrise was the original)
12 Years a Slave - really solid movie with good storytelling with Chiwetel
and N'upita.

I have been described as delusional by some, and that's from people who like me. Ran is either #4 or 5 on my all-time favorites list, depending on which one I'm rewatching at the time.
