But Michael is one of my favorites from Travolta, who was perfectly cast. Plus I loved the ensemble cast, even William Hurt.

Michael - as long as you're willing to think of it as a comedy. Travolting, Jean Stapleton, Andie McDowell, William Hurt, Bob Hoskins, Robert Pastorelli, Joey Lauren Adams.
Mom and Dad Save the World - not much high-brow humor, but I laughed a lot. Eric Idle, Dwier Brown, Kathy Ireland, Jon Lovitz, Teri Garr, Jeffrey Jones.
Hot Fuzz - similar humor style to Shaun of the Dead, but I thought better.
Hero - Chevy Chase, Geena Davis. I consider it very funny, but it is a cynical dry humor, not slapstick.
I once saw a film with I think John Cleese, but cannot recall the name or identify it with imdb. It seemed like 80's vintage, and he played I think a principal or headmaster who was about the countryside and was having a very bad day, nothing went right. Anybody know what film I'm talking about? I felt it was my favorite British humor work of the time.

You mite get dazzled by Pandora Peaks and not notis the comedy. Burt Reynoldz gets the best linez. Demi Moore, her dotter and Robert Patrick do a fine job az the broken family. A must see if youre a Ving Rames fan. Exellent movie all around.

I was unable to give it a big thumbs up because I had read the most excellent book. The best character for laughs in the book was the one played by Ving, but all of his best stuff is not included in the film - not sure if just left on the cutting room floor, but I suspect they were never put in the script. I was really disappointed. Burt seemed to be the high-point of the film, which seemed to be mostly just trying to make a buck off of Demi's Fake-Os. I don't even recall if she shows them off.
The book was one of Carl Hiaasen's better works.

Really fun movie, and yes Burt Reynolds has some great lines and truly funny scenes, so completely against type. I totally forgot about this movie, it's one of my favs in recent times. Ving Rhames also had some good lines -
"whip out the little feller" and "you see how a guy can get arthritis"
Great pick.

OK, now I must word this more strongly. If you guys liked the Ving Rhames character and portrayal, you really MUST read the book. Ving might have read the book as background for the role, and he did get the jist of what the character was like, but the best stuff from him is left in the book.
Be sure to let us know how well you liked it.
In fact, you could just skim the pages to the parts where his character is on the page.
